The thing with the Ayala types is they usually do not recover all that well from their first loss. It's usually a bad ko defeat & they are not the same. So what you very well could have--and this is exactly what I expected to see if he fought Mugabi/Jackson/Hearns/Duran/McCallum/and so on----is a guy that is diminished goods. With not a good defense and a left arm he kept at his waist.

So then you have a Tony Ayala at about 75%. And lets say he chooses to move to middle. I just don't think he goes far. He'd continue to get big fights maybe, but I do not like his winning %. Like a Mayorga type guy

sometimes those shorter inside fighters do well overwhelming guys, but when they are beaten they are beaten up badly because they neglected to learn how to fight backing up so they are taking the full power of someone who first had to withstand their offense and then turned the table on them. Tyson or Frazier are good examples. I am not comparing Ayala to these guys, but a taller guy who is beating them up knows they don't have another fight plan, so he just puts his foot on the gas and usually gets a knockout. It becomes a case of how much punishment they can take.

How good was he? Lots of stories about him beating up guys in the the gym Cuvas ?? Duran running away from him ? .he didn't really fight a top ranked guy before he got banned up so who knows .Is he back inside ? He isn't playing with a full deck ?

He's dead. Died overnight in a gym of heart failure brought about by drug use.

Ayala, his family, the Duvas ans Shelly Finkle were, all human garbage and don't even deserve to be discussed. Lapdax yrs ago would bri him up Flea and other then regular posters shut him down EVERY time. Scum is scum and this forum THEN wouldn't put up with it. Ask McGrain

Just had a watch of a few fights. It's hard to say from the opposition but I'd say Hagler and Duran pick him apart; Hagler with surgical precision, Duran with brutal efficiency. At 154, I'd back Tommy to knock him out in spectacular fashion. Sugar Ray plays with the fat fool, as would Benitez have in 82. McCallum does a mix of SRL/MMH and gives a one sided beatdown.

The next tier with the likes of Drayton, Medel, Moore would have been interesting. From what I just saw, that looks about his level and he wins some and he loses some.

Best fighter in history that he could have beaten? I haven't given it a huge amount of thought but would say a small, not overly skilled middle such as a Rocky Graziano might be his ceiling.

If I would have known young Tony was sparring with WW Champ Cuevas in San Antonio that day, I would have driven down from Austin to watch it. That was the event that Cuevas was very impressed with Tony.

Cracking post and i am with you on the bolded.

What people have to remember too is that Tony was already hitting heroin and abusing the booze on top of it. Not exactly potential fulfilling material.

Total hype job mainly by the Duva"s and those of the time who lacked adequate sophistication....were merely ignorant....or simply stupid

Tommy hearns was a one round decimation.

If he went up for hagler a three round mauling.

Mccallum was too smart and would put a watson like beating down outclassing his man

I reckon a davey moore fight may be close with tony probably winning

If ayala had stuck around,a hungry powerful Matthew hilton would probably have ritually sacrificed him after benitez and antuofermo
