Anyone here ever meet him? I have never heard bad press about Terry and surely one of the most respected british trainers. Had a very impressive C.V. as a trainer / manager.
I spoke to him briefly at the fights a couple of times.I didn't know him, but he had good name, looked after his boys and was never afraid to stop a fight if his guy was getting badly worked over.A couple of guys I knew lived near his gym the Royal Oak and trained there a bit.
John H Stracey, Maurice Hope, Jim Watt, Charlie Magri, Jim McDonnell, Mark Kaylor, Jimmy Batten, Jimmy Tibbs, Gary Mason, John L Gardner, Ralph Charles and many others.
From that list I know Jim Watt and Gary Mason. Not sure about Jim McDonnell. Is he the same guy as the one that currently trains James Degale?
Yes. Among the boxers Lawless managed/trained were: Ralph Charles Jimmy Tibbs Peter Boddington Phil Watford Tommy Rix Brian Brazier Johnny Caiger John L. Gardner Frank Bruno (WBC Heavyweight champion) - a title won under the guidance of Frank Warren Charlie Magri (WBC Flyweight champion) Maurice Hope (WBC Light Middleweight champion) John H. Stracey (WBC Welterweight champion) Jim Watt (WBC Lightweight champion)[5] Joe Calzaghe (WBO, WBA & WBC Super Middleweight champion, but not until he had moved on from the management of Duff and Lawless[6][7]) Jim McDonnell (EBU Featherweight champion) Derek Angol (Commonwealth Cruiserweight champion) Mark Kaylor (British and Commonwealth middleweight champion) Gary Mason (British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion) Neville Meade (British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion) Mo Hussein (Commonwealth Lightweight champion) Jimmy Batten (British Light Middleweight champion)[8] Tony Wilson (British Light-Heavyweight champion[9] John Graham (Light heavyweight) Peter Bradley (Lightweight)
I think Watt should be in the Hall of Fame. He was a good champion. Beat good challengers (love his win over Davis a few days from Leonard-Duran Montreal. Deserves to be in just for that) and had a solid career. It took super champion Arguello to beat him and then only by decision. Watts stops Mancini inside 15 easily from southpaw. Watt is a criminally underrated fighter.
