And arcell never said Duran was the greatest lightweight, what he said was, after the first Leonard fight (ironic hey), at 3 in the morning, Arcel, Hugh and others were looking for a restaurant. Hugh asked Ray again if Duran was the greatest FIGHTER he ever trained. It said Arcel finally let go of the past and said, "Leonard was all used up when I got him, yes, Duran is the greatest fighter in the world today." He never said prime for prime Duran was better than Benny. To his death, he thou Benny was the greatest fighter ever.
Aaron Pryor definitely. Started at 135 lbs but he was avoided so he jumped to 140 lbs. A showdown with SRL would have been the ultimate grudge match and the stare down one to remember.
I don’t think Pryor would have done all that well above 140, especially in such a talented era. It may have ended up being a smart move for Pryor to reject the Leonard fight as he ending up getting the Arguello fight less than 2 years later.
I never said Arcel didnt train Leonard I said he never trained the light weight version. Arcel was 19 when Leonard won the title .Doc Robb moulded Leonard.
You are correct ,and I am wrong, it's been a while since I read it. Leonard is my number one at the weight. Gans number 2.Wiliams number 3. Duran 4.
He'd be one of the better picks but i reckon he falls by the wayside as well. It's an absurdly difficult task.
Four great picks. I do have Duran 1 and Leonard 2 then Gans Williams and oldtimer and personal fav LaVigne. There were a lot of great lightweights. Jeez, Ortiz Brown Ross Ambers Canzoneri McLarnin Laguna Buchanon DeJesus Armstrong Chavez Arguello Pryor Montgomery etc etc Nelson. Noone defeats them all. All lose once at least over the different rules rounds and eras.
No. Nobody could boss him at WW like Duran moving up, in my opinion. But, gun to my head, Gans, Armstrong, Leonard have a fair shot at giving that version of Leonard a great bout. Maybe even Ross. But if we consider any career sometime Leonard against any career sometime lightweight.... Langford sparks him out at the Lalonde stage, haha!
I really see no danger to SRL by anybody. Not Ike, he doesn't have the movement necessary to beat SRL. Armstrong, maybe he could score a close close points win, but I don't see it as really likely. Gans, great fighter, I just don't think he's big enough to get it done. Chavez I really can't see, I think he does worst than others named. The best guess is Benny, but again, I wouldn't count on it.
Listen to yourself son and you’ll hear how ridiculous you sound. It’s only history because it all happened before you were born. That’s why it’s called history in the first place lol.You can have a fantastic unmatched knowledge of boxing history like I do without having to be alive at the time of it. You sound just like old man Perry who used to post here.
