Again say what you want about Fraziers lack of weight lifting strength which BTW the over head press makes some of the biggest benches in the gym look completely average. I will say this I was standing rt there when Joe was correcting a guy on the finer points of the left hook and hit that 250 lb bag bare fisted while that bag was completely still and not only did he put a nice deep dent in it he also brought it up almost completely sideways. Besides my jaw dropping and my eyes popping I instinctively grabbed my ribs. When Joe demonstrated stuff on that 250 lb bag I almost always stopped what I was doing. It was that impressive. I guess in the sceam of things that was more important in his line of work than doing an overhead press with a permanent crook in his left arm.

That was my point weightlifting is not a good measure because it is specialized just like throwing a man in wrestling is....in the ringrFrazier was extremely strong. Conteh had better technique and explosion Frazier looked akward and uncomfortable lifting weights....but I get your point Frazier being the bigger man...

At boxing he was a great athlete. Skillset matched his sport.

Hes a favourite of mine Frazier. Its a great example isn't it with him, someone so rough and tough and hard punching in the ring, so naturally mediocre in other areas physically.

Eddie Futch said Joe Frazier had the worst body of all the heavyweight champions he has seen. Joe wasn't much of an athlete.

He did poorly in the many of the events. Most of the winners were NFL players.

Weightlifting is not a good measure of strength?
    How is that?
If you put a boxer and a weightlifter to do some heavy labor, picking and carrying heavy stuff around, I would bet my house that weightlifter is gonna easily outperform boxer.

What about functional strength?? I was a laborer more than half my life running Jack Hammers doing cement work black top ect. Myself and other coworkers would and still do smoke younger stronger gym rats. There's different kinds of strength

    Functional strength?
    How do you define that?

Are you familiar with strongman competitors?
Those guys train heavily with weights.

A guy with a 600 lbs deadlift and a 400 lbs bench will smoke you easily on every physical task depending on physical strength.
And those are not elite numbers...

Was that just one movement though? How many different lifts was there? He may have carried power elsewhere like squats or deadlift.

Functional strength IMO would be being fluid and coordinated not falling over two left feet. Also being able to mantain a certain level of strength during competition. Ive seen plenty of guys who could lift heavy weight in a gym off a barbell that couldnt apply it athletically. The agility gets lost.

Do you do manual labour?? Strongman is completely different than just judging Frazier on his inability to to an overhead press

You need to have good balance to squat 600 lbs or overhead press 300 lbs ... It takes years to achieve that numbers. Certainly more difficult and challenging than picking up 50-100 lbs stuff in manual labor
