I recently placed my top 15 ATG of all time.. I put Rocco in there. I wonder how you guys feel about it. I put 2 fighters from his reumé in my top 15, Louis and Moore meaning he may qualify there Undefeated vs some great quality opp like some lesser known like Mathews,Louis, Sabold, etc, but his resume during his reign was good. Charles Walcott Moore You say these guys were washed up light heavyweights but let's keep in mind that Marciano wasn't exactly young and that he weighed less than his opps every time. Don Turner, 112 years old, and seen em all, has ranked him the hardest puncher he ever saw. What say you ? Top 15 or no
top 3 ATG heavy weight. Started boxing late with only a few amateur fights and retired undefeated. Italians are the best fighters in the world.
Not top 5 but possibly top 6-10. He fought very little fight compared to the guys of his time and he took on elite guys when they were on the down swing. (ie fighting Joe Louis in the 50s after Joe had fought through the previous 2 decades of the 30s and 40s and took time out to entertain the troops during WWII.) Maricano did his job and he had the backing of the Genovese Family so he was never gonna lose anyway.
If that's the case then a Jewish lawyer from Harvard never started a boxing promotion with the Nation of Islam by the name of Top Rank Boxing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Rank https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jabir_Herbert_Muhammad The point of putting that up was to make a point that even perceived enemies will come together for a buck. Nobody in that era could stay undefeated without the mobs help. He was fighting guys who had nearly 100 fights on their records and more knockouts than he had fights but Marciano at 5'10", 180 lbs was unstoppable? GTFOH! Sonny Liston was controlled by the mob and to this day people claim that he was paid to take a dive against Ali but, the idea of an actual Italian fighter being mob controlled is out of the question to some. This "sport" is gangsta at it's core
Not in the top 100. Beat old Moore, old Walcott, old Louis, not as old but washed up Ezzard Charles 100 fights in. All of these guys just retired right after or never had a meaningful win after. I guess Roland La Starza and Lee Savold are good wins, but nothing special, not enough to put him in the top 100 p4p. He was a place holder who was really lucky to come around when there weren't any good heavyweights. If he'd come around ten years earlier Louis, Walcott, Moore, and Charles would have him for lunch and if he'd been any later Patterson and Liston would too. He'd be one of the best cruiserweights of all time H2H though with his chin, stamina, and power.
Top 10 atg of course, still one of the most famous boxing names of all time. h2h he slips down a bit but not hugely.
Really high knockout percentages are usually a sign that your competition is lacking. It's a stat basically comparable to Vitali Klitschko's recent 45-2 with 41 knockouts. He was a great heavyweight, but he didn't fight a lot of great heavyweights. With the exception of Lennox Lewis, who'd he fight? Peter? Sanders? Briggs? Same deal with Deontay Wilder. 40-0 with 39KOs. This content is protected
Marciano and Duran tied #1 fav fighters in my heart. I just love raw brutality and they brought it in bunches. So to me yeah sure. He definitely is an all time great in the sense that he’s one of the most known boxers of all time. And he will be remembered for all time. Ykno. Fills the criteria etc
Marciano didn't have Ali's era of brutal opposition, but he did beat some great fighters such as ezzard charles, Walcott, and Archie Moore, they all put up decent fights too.
