My point is, and the records shows, that his power was not well proven. I think that is pretty obvious in my post. Perhaps the impression he was some sort of great powerpuncher was residual from the ballyhoo concocted during his run to Dempsey. In their fight, Dempsey got lazy or careless and got caught against the ropes in bad position. There are even those who would argue his punch was more a push. Whatever, Dempsey got himself into a bad position. I am not sure how this is supposed to relate to the discussion at hand. And it is factually incorrect. Sullivan was champion for an extended period, creating a gap between himself and his challengers that was unmatched in successive decades.
If you had questioned Firpo's power in his own day, you would have had people spluttering their bootleg whisky! At some point you have to trust the opinion of the day. How would Frank Bruno's record look in 100 years time, and what would suggest that he was a dynamite puncher, other than the opinion of contemporaries?
And who's opinion was it that claimed Firpo was some fantastic swatter? And based upon what? Take away Rickards paid newpaper lackeys (the ones he bragged about having on payroll) and what is there left of substance? In Bruno, we have many bouts against top level opponents to see his power in action, even those bouts he lost. And among those he won, we have Coetzer, Bugner, Coetzee, Cummings, Ferguson... to name a few, not guys with ZERO fights or with losing records. There is a world of difference.
"Every blow Firpo landed staggered me."" I don't remember climbing back into the ring."" I mumbled to Doc, what round was I knocked out in?" Firpo seems to have hit hard enough to scramble Dempsey's brain temporarily?
Oh yes they were.I was ringside for the Coetzer,Coetzee and Cummings fights. Cummings had lost hs last4 and won 1 of his last 7! He was having his last fight. Coetzer had been badly mauled by Bowe, he would have one more fight and retire. Coetzee was nearly 15 lbs heavier than he had been when Page ko'd him, at 232.75lbshe was soft and flabby. He would retire for 7 years after this fight. Bugner was 37 and fat,he actually gained weight in training ! Ferguson was 37 had won 4 of his last 10,and would lose his next 4. Firpo had beaten Willard albeit Jess was old.Brennan and Clever Charley Weinert, all by ko. Going into the Dempsey fight Firpo was 25-2 with 21 kos ,he finished with a 70% ko record,to deny he was a serious puncher is absurd!
DEMPSEY haters here there everywhere. Ftr, DEMPSEY by 10 count in 1. NOONE trades punches w/ Jack Dempsey in his prime and stays standing.
Again, in comparison to who Firpo KO'd, Bruno looks golden. Firpo's accomplishments simply don't set the bar very high. Willard was 43 years old which is ancient today, let alone for those times. "Clever" Charley Weinert was 180 pounds and got KO'd 1 out of every 6 times he entered the ring. Those are his career highlights. Are you going to really argue that these are better than a Coetzer who just got within a whisker of a title shot a Ferguson who just had a title shot a year earlier? And again, Firpo's glorious KO record is preponderantly filled with fighters who have LOSING records, 21 out of 26. That's not just some extra padding or some easy filler fights, that's the substance of his career.
Lyle was not exactly a model of consistency....if Ron is on it will be pretty exciting while it lasts but he gets koed...if off....it won't be very exciting...Dempsey would never lose a war...except perhaps to Jeffries...thanks
Would love to discuss Dempsey vs. JEFFRIES. I have about 10 Dempsey books and 3 Jeffries bios. Plus I Just finished in the ring with Jeffries, then In The Ring w Fitzsimmons then The Choynski Chronicles. 90-1928 best era ever. Books on fighters throughout the era. DEMPSEY vs. JEFFRIES matchup fantasy #1. 25 rounds. No mouthpieces. 5 ounce gloves. No neutral corner. In the afternoon under the sun. Heaven man.
Dempsey would lose many wars... Foreman, tyson,Louis, Frazier, Tua would own him toe to toe marciano and liston are 50/50,
