I agree with everything you say, but it is interesting Rocky did not really outweigh them when they fought at heavyweight. Technically they were naturally the bigger fighters (kind of). They were in pretty good shape when they fought Rocky or at least they seem to be, and they carried their weight well. i have also read at times that rocky tried to come in at a heavier weight, but he never really did. If they found it easier to reach the bigger weights than rocky, then maybe, just maybe Rocky could have dropped down to 175 like they did. Youd imagine he would do better than average at the weight if he could! Might make a Robinson catchweight fight almost realistic.
I think 175 lbs would be too light for a mature Rocky.Robinson had thoughts of a fight with Moore and had him round to dinner to bounce it around ,but he decided, wisely in my view, to leave it alone.Marciano would have walked through him.
I think so too, but it is a little strange that Moore and Charles both ended up heavier than Rocky, dont you think?
Moore was bigger in the torso that Rocky, with a broad chest and big biceps.Charles had a 6 foot frame.Rocky had a narrow chest and biceps, a lot of his weight was in his legs.
Personal opnion , like you have yours, but unlike you I don't need to insinuate some one is on some type of chemical because they have a difference opnion than mine, or be from some other demographic. And I can come up with just as much evidence for him being top 15-20 as you could on just one fact, his 49-0 record.
Why is Steward even comparing him to today’s heavies? That’s stupid as we are talking about Rocky’s OWN era. Yeah, and despite all those other negatives, he KEPT WINNING. And he wouldn’t just win, he’d stop you or win convincingly. I obviously respect Steward but he’s a detractor, I can pull up dozens of people in the sport who praised him.
He only compared him to todays heavies when it came to his chances against them.Him fighting old past prime men and being slow with bad balance has nothing to do with modern heavyweights. Marciano did not always win convincingly either, many thought he lost both the first Lastarza and Lowry fights. The thread states," where do you place Marciano" to do that you have to compare him across eras! In doing so I think you will find very, very few experts who would give him a realistic chance of success toady, unless he was fighting at cruiser, which of course is an entirely different kettle of fish.
Yes he did, he also said a cut man is a needless expense and a con and that hook and jab pads are useless. Any other trainers on record as agreeing with him? Turner states he was mentored by Charley Goldman but the dates don't really add up. ps Goldman is the first trainer I have been able to find who utilised a form of hook and jab mitts. Today, probably not. He’d make a FINE cruiser, though. He’d be a wrecking machine at that weight. So he won a couple close calls early in his career, who hasn’t? Once he hit the elite level, his last 12 fights or so, he couldn’t be stopped.
Absolutely. There have been thousands (probably more) of HW boxers over the years, so any of them that can make my top twenty (and Charles does), I would have to consider great.
