This is from Herns' wikipedia entry:

"Hearns was known as a devastating puncher throughout his career, even at cruiserweight, despite having climbed up five weight classes."

Hearns was before my time so I've only seen one fight of his, is this quote really true? A WW who was a puncher at CW, kinda hard to believe.

Well, you've got to first ask yourself what that welterweight weighed when he came into the ring rehydrated. Was he still a 6'2 147 pounder, or closer to a middleweight?

There in answers most of your question. He wasn't anything close to a natural welterweight, so his ability to still punch at at cruiserweight isn't quite so surprising.

Fighter Freddie Delgado is another good yard stick to give you a good idea of how hard Hearns hit. He also fought Moorer, Charles Williams, and James Toney. All of them stopped Delgado... except for Hearns.

What made Hearns so scary was his devastating power at 147. At 6' 2" he had the upper body strength of bigger men. It was uncanny that he could even make that weight as tall as he was. So going against most other welterweights his power was unmatched. As he moved up in weight, he had to face bigger and stronger guys. Many of them could take his punches (Hagler, Barkley) so he lost that mystique as he went up in weight.

I think he was always a guy who could hurt someone, but he was not a big puncher at 175 no.. Which is why his big fights in that era-many of them went 12 rounds.

Maybe Hearns didn't have the natural leg-strength at higher weights that add torque and power to the punches.

He was still a big puncher imo. He shook hill up a few times. He wasnt strong for the weight though.

yes. He knew how to transfer his body weight into power. I remember watching him fight Andres at lhw and he had him down about 4 or 5 times and Andres was a tuff sob. This guy hearns was incredible. I dont think he had Kovalev power but he could hit alright.

Mediocre? Get real. The guy had Andries up and down like a yoyo and had Hill extremely respectful after hurting him. This does not = mediocre.

He was still a reasonably strong puncher well up in the weights.

he was. He punches well out of technique not weight. His slowing reflexes and extra body mass were what limited his boxing skills at higher weights, not the other way round.
