That was some accuracy wowee I am glad Louis came around when video was at least good enough to capture his subtle greatness

 

Great picture. Baer never saw it coming. He had no business getting in the ring with Louis.
I believe he went into that fight with a broken hand that wasn’t healed.

 

Amazing quality as always Rez. But I think it's more a case Buddy not really knowing what he's doing. Philly shell is heavily reliant on shoulder rolling the right hand. Buddy didn't even try.

 

I’ve seen this many times before and was always puzzled how Louis found Bears jaw with a right even though his chin seems pinned to the inside of his own shoulder. Thanks to this footage it is now possible to see that the left (that I thought was to the body) is actually aimed at knocking the forearm which momentarily tugs Baers shoulder out of the way for the right to land!

 

A tall rangy guy I sparred with in my youth had a penchant for jabbing to the top of your left shoulder which would throw your chin up and into line for his long right hand ,as I was considerably shorter than him it didn't trouble me too much,but he got me once, only he didn't clip my chin he hit me in the throat ,which really ****ed me.I couldn't talk properly for days.

 

Lovely little clip. It's great to see how far Louis' fist/arm follows through and keeps on travelling after making contact with Baer's jaw. Cracking technique and he generates so much torque whilst changing levels from a crouched position.

When I first started watching boxing and then studying the old timers, there were so many subtleties I was missing and I really didn't understand what made Joe Louis so great. Years later I think he's the stand out fighter of the divisions history, based on his intangibles. By no means the most unique, in fact far from it, but it's the subtleties that I was missing which is probably what made him the great fighter he was

 

No matter what silly appellation you label a defense, it's not much of a defense if you are have been beaten to a pulp and are standing static, allowing someone to tee off.

 

THe "Philly Shell" relies on being in a very bladed stance to make sure that shoulder is up in front of the face. Buddy was standing too square and left Joe just enough of a window to land the right hand.
