Inva recent post, the 60s welters were mentioned COKES, RODRIGUEZ, AND GRIFFITH. ADD NAPOLES. I BELIEVE IF THEY ALL FOUGHT HIM TWICE, RODRIGUEZ, NAPOLES AND GRIFFITH EACH BEAT SUGAR RAY LEONARD AT LEAST ONCE EACH. ESPECIALLY RODRIGUEZ. I WOULD TAKE THEM OVER HEARNS ALSO. RODRIGUEZ TWICE

Just for fun, we could include Gypsy Joe Harris, and give him a 150 lb fighting weight. (The 60's TV fights, with the fighters all fudging a pound or two).

Me too Morlocks....I consider Napoles the greatest welter champ...aside from SRR of course. Loved Griffith too, but I liked him even better as a middleweight champ.

Forgot about him. You're right, Harris would drive a Leonard crazy. Have a great bio of him.

it's funny Dundee trained Rodriguez and Leonard, and at times Napoles. If he really told the total truth for once, I wonder who he thought was best. NAPOLES played with and easily beat GRIFFITH.

And what is more amazing is that Napoles was like a toy flung to a giant vs the great Monzon.

Harris was kinda/sorta the Emanuel Augustus of his time.

Yes, but that bout was eagerly anticipated at the time back then...and many were very sure that Napoles was going to make Monzon look like a cigar store Indian...totally outclass him. Monzon beat him so easily that he gets little credit for the win today....they consider it a mismatch...it sure as hell wasn't considered a mismatch back then...a HUGE write was done on it pre-fight in Boxing Illustrated with sooo many so called "experts" going with Napoles.

Exactly - I know from your previous posts that you were around at the time so you know how the fight was perceived going into it at that time.

People tend to rewrite history as if the result and way a fight went made it a mismatch or a foregone conclusion when no-one was saying that before the fight.

A lot of people try to take credit away from Monzon because Napoles was a WW coming up. I've never understood that. Like you say, before the fight many boxing people were picking Napoles to win. He was highly rated as a WW champ and considered to be one of the best, if not the best, in the sport, whereas Monzon wasn't quite so highly rated. I think it was a question of aesthetics - Napoles looked great when he fought and Monzon looked awkward. But Monzon proved awkward for Napoles and then boxing writers started to realise that Monzon was a great one too!

Remember Monzon got stripped of one of his titles for taking the Napoles fight.....with Rocky Valdez entering the title picture then.

What is amazing is Monzon gets no credit for Napoles while Hagler fought nothing but non-middleweight fighters the last 3 years of his career and some call him the greatest mid ever. Mindboggling! Also, he struggled with Duran Mugabe and Leonard. I actually thought he lost to Duran. But irregardless, if Monzon and Napoles were US, they would be unbeatable legends like in their countries and latin America

Leonard over all of them. Some might take a best of 3 to get over. Numerous close, competitive and often brilliant fights.

Yes. Judge each rd, especially the first 4 and see who is landing. I though Roberto won more rds. Period.

Ok, i had Hagler winning easily and by much more than the judges. I've never seen it scored for Duran.
