Dave Allen sent a tweet out this morning saying he doesn't think Mike Tyson is in the top 15 of all time and it has elicited uproar in some places, with a lot agreeing with him. bare in mind this is an all-time great list and not head-to-head, so "Tyson would beat anyone from history in his prime" is not an answer. in your opinion, where does he rank?
6-10 My top ten in no special order: Ali, Louis, Lewis, Foreman, W. Klitschko, Holmes, Frazier, Holyfield, Tyson, Marciano (Honorable mentions: Liston, Bowe, Patterson, Schmeling, V. Klitschko) To be honest, Louis and Marciano are the only oldtimers I rate. I don't really think you can compare the old timers to the greats, starting in the sixties, with Louis and Marciano being exceptions.
No lower than 15. Had he retired after Golota and not taken Ls to lesser fighters, he was a lock top 10
Mike Tyson is definitely NOT in the top 15. Doesn’t have the resume. Lost badly to the top guys of that sheltered 90’s era in Lewis and Holyfield while also being on the receiving end of arguably the biggest upset in boxing history against Douglas. He got put away for 3 years for attempting the caveman approach to getting a mate and his Swan song was getting beaten into submission by Kevin McBride. Does that sound like a guy who should be listed anywhere near the likes of Marciano, Wladimir Klitschko or Joe Louis?? Dudes not ANYWHERE NEAR the top 10. The word “Great” and Tyson really just don’t go together. Sorry.
Tyson was an unbelievable counter/pressure fighter while being trained by Rooney and fought brilliant beating a brilliant fighter like Tucker he would have troubled a lot of great heavies.
I believe he's top15 despite his very short prime and his resume not reflecting the hype he once had. But, he in my opinion he should be there because of the numbers and how devastating he was in his prime. The youngest HW beltholder of all time and after only 20 months as a pro. Undisputed within 29 months. Beating 10 former or current Heavyweight beltholders in his career, and having 9 succesful defences in a row for his first belt.
Top ten to top 15 is fair in legacy. I think I have him at 11 or 12. Some good names, plus unifying and a 9 defense win streak.
I can't put Tyson in the top 10. Haven't really thought about it further, he might make top 15. His "prime" was a 2-3 year streak. Granted he looked fantastic when winning but he also looked vulnerable to spoiling tactics and mentally a bit fragile. If he'd kept that form up for another 2 years maybe we'd not even be having this conversation. I weigh longevity fairly heavily, and Tyson doesn't feature there.
