Is there a difference between the two? Any favorites? Bert Cooper. Good enough to fight the best, just never beat the best. Bert was the HW gatekeeper in the 90s, IMO. Up n comers back then didn't pick him to pad their record. You had to go thru Bert to prove that valor and he tested every great. Didn't roll over. Orlin Norris, Ray Mercer, Riddick Bowe, Evander Holyfield, Michael Moorer. Ballooned Ray's face in a BRUTAL slugfest. Gave Holy a standing 8. Dropped Moorer twice in a fight of the year pick. Emanuel Augustus & Orlando Salido are another 2 fighters I knew would lose the fight, but they never showed up to lie down. You had to earn that fight. & if you weren't on your game, Salido and the Drunken warrior would score an upset.
Unfortunately he's too identified with Wilder mockery now, but Sconiers was a real tough out journeyman back in his time. He beat a couple contenders.
elijah tillery sherman williams quick tillis jose ribalta danny williams dereck chisrora jornneymen but who not good enough to be champs but who fought hard and did not lay down
Sconiers was 3-15 going into the Wilder bout. Only remotely impressive name he had was ray Austin. Outside of that I fail to see the contenderS he defeated
purrity was a genuine hard man forgot about joe hipp native american who looked about as fit as the michelin man but he was a warrior love raising arizona film and tex cobb /he was a great character.
Mccline and Austin are two good names for a contender, let alone someone who had a losing record. Hell, his two names are probably as good as Stivernes best names. Zuri Lawrence might be an even better example, although he didn't have a losing record like Sconiers. Zuri beat Sosnowski, Mccline, tied Austin and Mo Harris.
Tillery-- makes me want to get out Bowe-Tillary with Newman pulling a WWWE move... This content is protected
Gatekeepers are solid fighters who are supposed to be only lose to the top fighters int he division. Journeymen can be interchangeable, but I consider journeymen to be on a lower level of skill than Gatekeepers. They both make this sport what it is. The real question is WHEN is a fighter labeled a gate keeper?
Gatekeepers are usually the guys who have gotten past domestic level, have failed in World title shots but are always there or there abouts at World Level, everyone knows they arent World class but they are a good test. Derek Chisora is the perfect example. A journeyman is somebody who you fight early on in your career, they usually have more losses than wins, they take fights on short notice, usually fight twice a month. Sticking with the heavyweight division, Jason Gavern would be a good example
