Valentino had already retired when this was staged, right? He was done and looks bad... as does Louis but it was a different level of class.
Valentino later claimed that he was already partially blind (no vision in his right eye) in this fight. He had been inactive for a while recovering from an eye operation prior to taking the Charles fight on short notice. He then fought the Louis exhibition 7 weeks after getting knocked out by Charles.
It was after seeing this that Lee Oma's manager angrily withdrew his man from an exhibition with Louis, saying that if Louis wanted a real fight then he should say so and the opponent should be paid for a real fight, instead of getting busted up like Valentino for a lousy five grand.
No heavyweight in history has put punches together like Joe Louis. The speed, the power, the precision, the angles and variety - absurd really. It's a shame so many don't realise what a truly destructive force he was.
This took place in 1950. Looks like he still had a little power left when he stepped in with Charles and Marciano. that right was deadly even at old age
Well this fight shows he was very active with that right hand and quite potent with it still in 1950..which debunks the theory that is power had completely vanished by that time. No doubt a shell of his former self but not a walking corpse
Not sure how going eight rounds with an immobile, half-blind retired fighter "debunks" much of anything, tbh.
Except that those that had watched him perform for a decade and a half against top flight opposition thought otherwise.... except that, you might have a point.
