Jimmy Bivins was Always a good fighter. Here is jimmy after losing to Joe Louis. If you can’t see how good Joe Louis’ right hand still was against Valentino let’s see if you can see Joe Louis beat a good fighter in Jimmy Bivins. This content is protected
Joe Louis fought very well against Cesar Brion, especially in the rematch. Without making comparisons with his pre war form and taking that fight on face value, it’s a strong win against a strong opponent worthy of any top contender. This content is protected
Bivins had begun to slide he had been stopped by Moore 3 times in the last 4 years, had lost his previous fight prior to Louis and would lose the one after. He was no longer ranked by the time he fought Louis.
Bivins was definitely on the steep decline when he fought Louis...although he did say louis still packed a heavy punch. The quote was “Louis lost his speed and reflexes but his heavy punch was still there”
Maybe, maybe not. Nobody stopped Brion. Charles did not handle Brion any easier than Louis did. Prime Louis never stopped Tommy Farr. However better prime Louis was than the 1950 version it dosnt stop the 1950 version being a good contender. Nowhere have I said Louis was prime against Brion. I just said he was still world class. Because he was.
Bivins was still good after losing to Louis. In 12 more fights only Charles, Baker and Tommy Harrison were good enough to beat him and none of them knocked him out. Jimmy even beat Mike Dejohn and Coley Wallace. It’s not like Jimmy was not ranked. Doc Williams was a good fighter too.
Joe's thoughts on his Brion fight.. "My timing was off." "I just couldn't get the combination going." The presses thoughts... "The ringside consensus was that Joe was fit as he will ever be. The sleeping pills simply are gone from Joe's aging fists. When he held the heavyweight title for 11 years, he registered 22 knockouts in 25 defenses. That was his stock in trade. It is not any more."
That’s all fair enough. Louis had been better, I don’t dispute this, but he was still good enough to make a large impression on the division. He had been one of the greatest of all time. Here are some quotes from Louis’s comeback fights. “He put away Savold with a right to the body and as beautiful a left hook to the jaw as you will ever see." - associated press. The Associated Press reported: "A crowd of approximately 12,000 paid $66,525 to see Louis batter the game South American all over the ring in the closing rounds. Brion stood up under punishment that would have flattened many a fighter. He was groggy from the seventh through the tenth. His face was puffed and blood flowed from cuts on the side of each eye. It was Louis’ second 10-round win over Brion. This one was far more decisive than their melee in Chicago last November."
“He put away Savold with a right to the body and as beautiful a left hook to the jaw as you will ever see." - associated press. Marciano could not deck Savold.
He wasn't ranked, and DeJohn had fought no one and wouldn't be ranked for another 2 years. Wallace was known more for his resemblance to Louis than anything he did in the ring,he had been fighting 3 rd raters was unranked and was only fleetingly taken seriously. Williams was never more than a second stringer, when he stepped up he invariably got beat, he had lost his last 3 fights, oh and he was a lhvy.Bivins won a split decision over him. Only those you mentioned were good enough to beat him? They were the only quality fighters he faced in those his decling years! You are attempting to lay bricks without cement!
Come now, Dejohn was 26-2 and Wallace was 18-1. If Bivins was so washed up he would have been slaughtered by those guys. Wallace was 16lb heavier. He beat Marciano as an amateur. Dejohn is a favourite of yours.
Savold was washed up,just further down the line than Louis, who had been a great fighter Savold had never been more than a good one even in his prime.
