What if the Spinks who beat Holmes fought in place of Billy Conn in June, 1941? How would the fight go and how competitive would it be?

Louis by knock out, no idea what round spinks defence was very good, but joe's offence was impeccable.

Interesting fight given that Spinks biggest strength was lateral movement and control of distance which as it turns out Conn used the same style......I see Spinks having a chance from a style perspective

I don't know. Spinks awkward movement could make it difficult for Louis to find him so soon.

IMO, this would have the makings of a competitive fight. Louis had the most trouble against moving boxers. In fact, I think Spinks (Michael, not Leon) could potentially give Louis more trouble than say, George Foreman (assuming Louis could survive Foreman's power) would. Just like I think RJJ would be competitive against Louis. Although I think Louis stops them both convincingly.

Plus keep in mind, Conn was 174 pounds in his fight with Louis. Spinks would be 200-205 pounds and it's safe to say that a 200+ pound Spinks hit harder than a 174 pound Conn. A 174 pound Spinks likely hit harder than a 174 pound Conn.

I can not see Spinks taking punches from a prime Joe Louis, Joe ripped to the body, head & kept it coming.

I know the Billy Conn fight make us wonder but Conn 1 Billy had legs & punched sporatically, Spinks was not a mover so I think he gets to Spinks quick (especially if he watched the Tyson fight)

Joe Louis loved guys that walked into his arsenal but also WAXED poetically " He can Run but he cant hide"

Conn didn't move. Conn fought in the pocket. It was his plan from the beginning and was described as such by Moonie in the build up to the fight.

The only guy who had any success moving against Louis was Walcott, perhaps the most unusual and difficult mover in the history of the division, in two fights where Louis had slipped.

He had no problems with movers, at all.

Spinks did not have the movement or footspeed of Conn, Louis would find it easier to tag him, against that Spinks his appreciably harder than Billy.

Conn was in and out ,similar to Leonard v Hearns.
    No problems with movers? Pastor?

Conn fought in the pocket sporatically but his legs angles and movement made a big difference from fight one to fight 2 IMO

Walcott was crafty, sneaky, great legs but heavyhanded. Michael Spinks was a great lightheavyweight and a better heavyweight than Bob Foster but IMO a frailish heavyweight Tyson KO 1

Walcott was a mover not a runner, great angles & feet The 5"11 179lb Bob Pastor moved & boxed well enough to survive Joe 1st fight & go to the 11th in his bouts with Joe.

However I agree Joe had more trouble with guys that crowded him like Godoy but Joe fought all kinds & rematched all tough fights & always improved 2nd time around

He probably won eight of ten against Pastor in the first fight.

In the second fight, he knocked him down something like six times.

Tyson had much quicker feet than Louis though.
