January 9, 1942: Joe Louis vs a modern super heavyweight

Louis demolished Carnera, Baer and Simon. Crushed them with power .. Louis lifted a 240 pound Galento off the floor with a left hook .. Louis was an absolute monster on power .. Dempsey proved himself against giants too .. not everybody carried that sort of power but these two did ..

 

That's the point I try to make when people have Wilder ect beating these atg fighters. I don't see it. Ok i get athleticism andl the other size points but these guys are still not on the same level as fighting machines that guys like Louis Dempsey Liston ect were on. Hope I'm getting my point across

 

This. Size has benefits such as improved punch resistance, more power, better clinching, reach etc. Size does not teach you skills or sharpness or muscle memory. Size will help against a shot ATG because the great fighter no longer has that sharp edge that made him great. Size will help a lot less when the other guy has great skills and mental preparation.

One of my favourite MMA guys was a kickboxer called Vovchanchyn. He made mincemeat out of three guys bigger than McBride in one night, because he had the skills and he had the determination. He was 5'8 and 210lb.

What I'm saying is: I think Louis turns on the taps and tattoos McBride.

 

Of course Carnera was better than some of them. He wasn't unskilled, and damn sure wasn't slow. His problem was he didn't really hit that hard for his size and could't take a punch that well.

 

Takam would have boxed the ears off of Carnera!

 

Better question would be how would 214lbs Wilder that KO`d Ortiz fair against Louis, his only advantages in size would be reach and height like the Ortiz fight proved it also proved if Louis caught a big guy like Ortiz he could take him out like Buddy Baer.

 

Perhaps....but some of AJ's opposition would be less fortunate

 

Joe Louis would do great against the giant heavyweights of today. Louis excelled at taking the jab away from big guys and breaking them down round by round.

Buddy Baer was just as big as Wilder and had just as good of a right hand and was still beat by Louis.

Primo had an 85 inch reach, which is longer than Joshua, Wilder's, or Wlad's reach. Primo also had a great jab and right uppercut, but Louis neutralized both. Primo was also 260 lbs, but it didn't save him. Primo also regularly crushed other giant heavyweights with his uppercut.

Bob Pastor was 6'0" and 183lbs and gave Louis one of his toughest fights. Pastor several years earlier had no problem wearing down and stopping Ray Impelletiere 6'7" 238lbs, who gave Primo a heck of a fight.

I see guys like Chris Byrd, Holyfield, and Michael Moorer, and Jimmy Young in their primes giving Louis more problems than guys like Joshua and Wilder, since they were crafty, fast, and hard to land clean on.

 

Wilder only weighed 214lbs when he KO`d the much heavier Ortiz proving the weight thing to be a myth, like Dempsey said once you are above 200lbs you can knock anyone out as he proved vs Willard, Wilder is all about reach he just threatens with that long jab once you take that away he`s finished.

 

Takam would have stopped him.

 

Buddy Baer though a solid puncher couldn't hit like Wilder,imo.
Carnera pushed his jab ,and lacked both power and a chin.
Impelletiere was a novice.
Campolo 280lbs? He was 224lbs for Risko, and 232 lbs for Loughran
Pastor survived against Louis in their first fight by running all night ,it was called," Bob's Bicycle Act ",he elected to trade in the rematch and was blitzed.

 

That knockout by Carnera over Campolo was beautiful.
Did you see how he side stepped while punching with perfect reaction timing, agility, and distance control?
I don't want to say who he reminds me of there.
No, I won't dare, because I have a family.

 

Ever see the rematch in which Campolo ,having his last fight went the distance?

 

If we're talking about size alone, we can add Jose Santa, who was, at least in terms of physique, every bit as impressive as Kiltschko or Joshua (and slightly larger than either).
