Oh yeah! Quite right boys. Anyone who wants to change their Dark Matter vote to Top Ten, please do so.

I cannot even imagine the reaction of baby ears i "higher" suddenly became "outside the top 30" or something.

    Good point, lol.
I find it more concerning that people could not decipher exactly what "higher" meant in this case.

That’s actually a very good line. Can I use it in future talks about Ali’s second fight with Liston?

    I voted top ten,

but have to admit, after admitting being old and getting a trifle slow on the gas pedal,

that I thought higher meant higher than merely top ten, like top five or even at or near the very top. Why? I guess "higher" is a positive word generally. It is generally used as a sub for better. To rate higher than someone is to rate better than that person. To rate highest is to rate best. If you list a top hundred and say A ended up higher than B, one would assume A rated nearer the top, not nearer the bottom.

But I must say looking carefully, it does go from top 10 to top 20 to top 30 and then to "higher."

It just confused this old man, but my vote wasn't affected.

Nobody around here thinks of you as a "confused old man." Everybody's been bitten once too often to believe that **** ;)

Yes this seems the sensible choice.

This whole thread was put up only to humiliate me...but it seems to have backfired somewhat...

    Happy Easter guys.

The bottom line why a lot of fights back then weren't made was taxes, not fear. Johansson already had a big money fight in 1961 and so another in the same year might be largely fighting for the government.

The article does imply that Ingo didn't actually know all that much about Liston one way or another. Perhaps if he did, he would have been ducking him, but he doesn't seem to have even seen him fight and might well not have been into the American sporting press.

After Liston became champ, Liston talked of Johansson having to wait his turn, but a neurological test that came back showing damage caused Ingo to abruptly retire.

That’s the way I understand it during the 1962 period too.

When Ingo was #1 challenger Sonny was rated as the worlds #9 contender. I never heard of a #1 contender being afraid of the #9 contender. I don’t think anyone offered Ingo a million dollars to fight the #9 rated contender in 1958-59. It does not make sense.

Between 1959-1962 it was all rematches.

At the end of 1959 Liston moved up to number 3 in the rankings. He was not number 9 in 1959.

Secondly, Liston was viewed as a marvel. Never before had the heavyweight division seen a young contender with the size, jab, punching power, and strength of sonny Liston. The top contenders, managers, were petrified of a young Liston

I would not class any of those men as just having one good punch.

They all relied heavily on one punch, but they also had a lot more to their games.
