Foreman was young correct but no longer in his prime. The Ali fight ****ed it up for him. Foreman also, flew to Puerto Rico the day before the fight without giving himself time to acclimatize.
Maybe at the time but neither would've beaten a '73 Foreman. Much as I'd like Holmes to prove me wrong, as he's in my top 5 favs.
Foreman flew to Puerto Rico THE DAY, I REPEAT THE DAY before the fight without giving himself time to acclimatize. No big deal right?
Yeah, except he probably had an outright better chin and tighter defense than Holmes at his best, not that many will give him that kind of credit.
If true, it was a completely boneheaded move. I still think Young simply had the tools to get the job done over a plodding, gassing Foreman.
Agreed. No argument there. A '73 Foreman wouldn't have fought Young's fight. He'd corner him on the ropes, and pummel him in the matter of 3 rounds.
I have a world of respect for you Swaggy,...but no hell, he wouldn't "pummel" Jimmy Young....the rematch would have been a lopsided affair, like I've already mentioned. Foreman would have beaten him the first time if he had been able to at all....and he emphatically wasn't able to.
Maybe "pummel" is to strong a word, but I really don't see Young being much of a problem for Foreman in '73.
People see what they want to see with Jimmy, he's one of boxing's great unwashed "undesirables" who doesn't tick off enough of the appropriate boxes to stimulate the casual fan. Which is a shame, because at his sublime best he's probably actually in a top 15-25 list of all time great heavyweights, head to head. There is not a fighter in history Jimmy Young could not befuddle or out think and out maneuver. When you've proven rarest of commodities, even against fighters as great with styles as wildly varied as Ali and Foreman? Legendary heavyweights like Ron Lyle and Earnie Shaver's constitute Jimmy Young's B-Side performances, none the less the best work he did in the ring. The man is underrated, in not so many words.
He probably wasn't expected to blow Ali's ear drum out nor embarrass one of the supposed slickest and craftiest fighters to ever lace them up at heavyweight. Ali was the man that night that looked confused, worked up, out thought.
I re-watched this recently and I actually think Foreman edged it. To many it looked like Young won because the crowd was totally behind him and went wild over every little thing he did. And Howard Cosell did the same thing over the air. George touched Jimmy a lot more, landed the bigger punches, and the knockdown was half-stumble/half-punch, and was due to exhaustion.
