Any examples where a fighter's decision to work with a well-known trainer appears to have backfired? This thread was inspired by @greynotsoold 's comment that Manny Steward had ruined Oscar by taking him away from his natural fighting style.

Lou Nova never forgave Ray Arcel for not stopping his fight against Tony Gallento.

What was his natural fighting style, Manny taught Lewis to straighten his right hand and he turned into one of the greats surely working on Oscar`s right hand would have improved him because he was a one handed fighter, which fights did Manny train Oscar for because there were many flawed performances from Oscar?!

Teddy Atlas screwed up Briggs, Povetkin, and Michael Grant.
    Steward and Hamed didn't mix.

This is definitely questionable, but Eddie Futch was accused by Ken Norton's manager Bob Byron for over-training Norton for his second fight aganst Ali. Norton I believe only weighed 210 or slightly under for the second fight, and it was Futch who devised the fight plan that beat Ali in the first place. Futch left anyway after the fight to be Joe Frazier's trainer after Yank Durham died.
I know Larry Holmes wasn't happy with Futch for not training him against Michael Spinks because he trained both Holmes and Spinks, so Holmes brought back Ritchie Giachetti. I'm not sure who Spinks had in his corner for that fight, but I believe it was a very fair decision on Futch's part.

Didn’t Ricky Hatton blame Floyd Mayweather Snr and his training methods for his defeat against Manny Pacquiao?

Wonder if Joe Louis ever asked Chappie Blackburn "pre-fight #1" about what Schmeling's famous
comment: "I seez somezings" might mean?

Blackburn had been trying to warn him what Schmeling seez.

Louis held his hands up to that!

Don't know how well known he was but Cooney should have ditched Valle and his screw ball managers. They robbed the man of his self confidence and planted seeds of doubt in his head.
In the proper hands Cooney would have easily been a champ

Not sure if any trainer would have helped, but Senior sure didn't make it better. The 24/7 episodes really told how bad they meshed as a team.

My pick is Manny Steward with Jermaine Taylor. I forget the fight, but the final round Steward in an angry-I-give-up-tone of voice said "..Look ya got 3 minutes left" didn't even look at him when he said it...just got off the ring apron like he couldn't wait for it to be over.

Hopkins hiring Roach. Not sure I'd call it a setback as much as a bad matchup. Hopkins needs to hear supernatual, ghetto mumbo jumbo like Nazim and his " Pop that chain, stab him in his heart dialogue.

and my favorite...I want U to swim without getting wet"
Sounds like words from a George Clinton/Funkadelic AquaBoogie-P-funk album, not a damn boxing regiment.

Arcel was not in charge of Nova's corner that night,as he said it ," I had no authority to stop the fight."

    This

Add to that list Michael Moorer who was still pretty good under Atlas (thanks to previous years with Steward) but came more and more lazy with every next fight.

I actually think Michael Moorer would've had better career if he continued working with Steward.

It seemed Stewart wanted everyone to b a puncher n Go for the KO.
I remember him yelling at lewis to go for the ko on Tyson but lewis looked like he wanted to take his time. Telling yearns " u gotta knock this mother ****er out" v Leonard.
Also in the de LA hoya Trinidad fight as a commentator he kept saying Trinidad over trained, de LA hoya gotta go for the ko or something like that.
He also used to comment on how if he trained rrj he'd have him stop bouncing around n go for the kill.

Commenting on Lewis- He later said he hurt his hand and needed time for it to numb...Tyson's head almost injured Lennox's fists.
He stated..I knew Emannual wanted me to go for it but how do I tell him...
I guess that was the Kronk in him. Side- note I met a few who said Kronk Gym if anything was known for burning fighters out because of the ring wars and no air conditioning. That's why Andy Lee seemed so good, -all the best fighters stopped training there...
