I think it’s kind of anti-Liston to put Ingo down. If you put Ingo down where does it leave Liston? Talking up Ingo makes Sonny Look better. I don’t understand why some Liston supporters are so against the era they shared.
They didn't share the era. Liston dominated it. It was his. His resume is amongst the best even without johannson's name on it.
Ingo and Sonny are forever linked to Floyd Patterson. Both went down hill after their winning fights with Floyd.
Ingo got knocked out by Patterson 2 times. Liston beat Patterson by KO 2 times. Liston by quick 1st round knockout unless Ingo ran, then it would be a second round KO.
Well, discounting Johansson completely, the three best heavyweights other than Liston between 1958 and 1965 were Ali, Patterson, and Terrell. Liston dominated Patterson, but lost to Ali, and didn't fight Terrell.
I think Machen was likely Ingo and Liston's 2nd or 3rd best win. Ingo won that one with a KO in round one. Liston took Machen the distance and flirted with a DQ with low blows.
Liston dominated other men as good as Machen. Liston knocked out Foley and Williams whom Machen went 0-1-1 against. I would say head to head Zora Foley and Big Cat Williams were just as good as Machen. Machen took Liston the distance because he ran the entire fight, and didn't engage, he lost 10 out of the 12 rounds.
Terrell was Liston's sparring partner at various times. Liston said "Terrell hugs you more than my mother did".
I know. Just saying Ingo beat Liston's 2nd or 3rd best win far better than he did. I think Ingo would beat Foley too. Williams, close to 50.50
The Machen fight was the only time I saw Liston use "dirty" fighting tactics (w/o opening up the Clay "burning eyes" controversy).
I had Big Cat Williams winnning the Terrell rematch 48-45. I thought it was a highly questionable decision. In my mind, Big Cat Williams went 2-0 vs Terell
I don’t think anybody can argue with that. Sonny never fought in 1957. He was new on the scene in 1958 and wasn’t the outstanding contender until 1960.
