Burnett won a big fight last night and the silence is deafening, Big fan of Burnett but not his style (if that makes sense) maybe he is just too good for the other lads he boxes, Rumour has it he in a world tournament next year line the super middle and cruierweight one this year, that would be huge for him
I’m also a fan and realist. Neither were claiming it was for a world title and none of it was scripted or set up. One of the main problems (there are a few) with Irish pro boxing is that we have never had a ‘domestic scene’. Usually we’ve waited for a star to emerge, usually via the amateurs, then build the scene around him, then when he’s beat or retires the whole scene collapses. What we are trying to do is to build a pro scene from the grassroots up to avoid that.
good luck with... I know u boys will have your work cut fer yea ... when ur u coming 2 the black north
Right about there not bring a "scene". It's always been built on one "star". Plus the first green shoots of any emerging scene get annihilated in its infancy when recession hits. (And slap...there IS one coming...a recession that is, due to our suicidal boom-bust economic model here in the banana republic) One thing puzzles me though....why did a "scene" not emerge around the decent Irish middleweights of the last 10 yrs or so. Why did matches never happen between daddy/Lee/Macklin/spike? Not one of those guys fought each other....baffling??????
Burnett is a superb boxer. Bit of a worry that he seems very injury prone..bit he should take over from Carl as our next big star....
GGG versus Canello def off,Incredibly Spike O Sullivan is in with a very real chance of getting this fight,This would be incredible for the cork man, Of course he would be a huge underdog and it would be hard to see any way he could beat Golovkin but ill suport him for it and would wager that with GGG seemingly slightly on the decline and the fact that he will be facing somebody not percieved as a big star he may not be as switched on as we have seen him in the past,i believe Spike will do better than most people will think,
Spike hasn't a hope of beating GGG, puca, but like you I'll Be cheering for spike anyway. At least if it happens its better ...as in safer...than Andy lee getting ggg.
Think Spike would be wise not to take it. Hes got big fights on the horizon and more winnable fights in Lemuix and Rosado etc. No need to get pummled against GGG and all progress of recent times down the shitter. Actually a pity Lee retired as that would of been one last nice pay day for him .
It's all talk at this stage. Let's wait and see what happens. But: Spike is 33 and it's the "bird in the hand" moorser. Spike could lose at any time to any other contender and it's all over for him. Anyway spike is tough enough to take gggs punches without serious harm, provided his corner don't do what they did against cej, when it was left go on faaaar too long. GGG is spikes last big chance. He is in prizefighting to make money....I think he may as well take it if it's offered. Wouldn't ever have put Andy Lee in with GGG though....never!
I know what your saying take the opportunitys when they are there and all that but I think his style suits GGG who will have his way with Spike imo. Tough draw for N.Ireland in Commonwealth games, fancy McGivern and McComb to win Gold if they get a fair shake .
Totally agree...spike is tailor-made to make GGG look good. Ordinarily I'd say avoid GGG. But at spikes age, this could be...and likely is.... His last chance. I know I'm getting ahead of myself s bit here, but let's say GGG takes 10 rounds to finish spike, or struggles a bit with him. That might tempt Canelo to take spike in his return fight post ban.....to see if he can do better than GGG and sweeten the set up their rematch.... So spike could potentially get to fight em both! Wild speculation at this stage I know.....
Forget ten rounds, I think Spike's in with a chance to earn a moral victory and see the final bell. Stevens and Lemieux both saw round 8. Neither is any slicker than Spike.
