Why are no upcoming boxers utilizing the shoulder roll? It's such a tremendously effective technique

I think people are getting the shoulder roll confused with the Philly shell. Besides. Canelo uses it pretty effectively.

For me, I picture MVC walking around town and getting into street fights because people are making fun of him walking around town with Floyd's jizz all over his face.

"This isn't just anyone's jizz", then proceeds to get into the shoulder roll stance.

    1. You have to have a particular skill set in order to maximize strengths fighting this way. If fighters forced it, most would be maximizing their weaknesses.

    2. There has to be a gap in skill between the shoulder roller and his opponent in order for it to be logical in most occasions.

Not when MVC uses it, he drops you as soon as he does it.

If both guys use a shoulder roll there will never be a winner.

Many fighters roll shots with their lead shoulder. Golovkin does it quite a bit. Philly shell is the full stance. At least thats the way look at it.

This. Floyd had the reflexes, timing, footwork, and ring IQ to utilize it effectively. Broner, who at his best is a very talented fighter tried using the shoulder roll like Floyd, but lacked Floyd's footwork, timing, and ring IQ.

Also, even Floyd knew when and when not to use it. Floyd didn't use the shoulder roll much against guys that had a longer or similar reach than himself or had hands fast enough to time him.

The shoulder roll is part of the Philly Shell defense. It is done because the shell is so defensively vulnerable.

In fact, one standard response, if your opponent uses the shell, is to repeatedly punch his shoulder. - Esp if southy vs orthodox, as then you can use your jab.

And to answer the OP's question, in case it wasn't already: The reason it's not more common is because you need elite speed, movement and reflexes to pull it off. Otherwise, you're toast.

Also, it's primarily a counterpunching position. Many fighters are more front-foot oriented.
