Do you score 10-7 rounds with just one knockdown if the rest of the round is completely one sided?

Scenario - a fighter is getting battered in a one sided round. You are planning to score it 10-8 with no knockdown. In the last 10 seconds, the fighter getting battered gets knocked down also. He beats the count. Is this a 10-8 round?

If you score it 10-8, that means you didn't really take a point for the knockdown, because you had it 10-8 anyway.

And I've never seen anyone score a 10-7 round off one knockdown.

So explain this double standard please

It should be done sparingly, as with even 10-10 rounds.

If there is a round you would've scored 10-8 anyway based on ass-kicking merit (ie without a knockdown) and then a knockdown happens to also be scored on top of that, yes, it would then be 10-7 on my card. Two knockdowns in an extremely dominant round would be 10-6 (customarily scored for three knockdowns, or three points shaved for any combination of downs and/or deductions), etc.

So if Fighter A kicks Fighter B's ass from pillar to post, then in the final twenty seconds dribbles him off the canvas a couple of times but fails to put him away, then at the bell lands a foul and has a point docked, it would be a 9-6 round. (10-8 round to Fighter A on sheer ass-kicking, then made 10-6 because of the knockdowns, then deduct a point from the round winner)

I've scored plenty of 10-7 rounds with a single knockdown.

Okay maybe not plenty but they're not unheard of.

i have scored 10-8 rounds without a knockdown

a fighter is wobbled and battered pillar to post in a round but hangs tough and does not go down
and loses the round wide i score a 10-8

these are obvious cases of fighters surviving but in trouble

turn the situation on its head
ref calls a knockdown when a fighter is off balance from over commiting from a shot but his opponent lands a nothing shot glancing blow and ref issues a count .

i never score this a 10-8 round and we have all seen similar type things happen many times.

Hmm i never thought of that. Not that my "scorecard" matters anyway though

I typically never score 10-10 rounds and usually dont take a scorecard seriously that has an even round especially more than 1

I also dont really like scoring 10-8 rounds for no knockdown. I think I did it once for one of the early rounds of Ortiz vs Berto I where Berto was cornered and fired on for almost the whole round but I think its the only time. Write or wrong I think a guy should deserve some credit for being tough enough to stay on their feet under fire. Guys can take a knee for a 10-8 or gut it out by staying upright

I very rarely score 10-8 rounds without the knockdown, e.g. many scored Wilder - Ortiz round 7 8-10 but not here. I would want to see complete dominance of the whole round and a beatdown of a round.

On the other hand I don't mind 10-10 rounds, if it is really too close to call 10-10 just as fair as 10-9 either way.

Hard for me to think of this as a double standard when I've never decided a round should be 10-8 without a knock down until the round is actually over.

There have been many rounds in boxing history where it would've been stupid to not score it 10-8.

Just think of all the rounds where a guy is flopping around for nearly the full three minutes, constantly on the verge of going down, getting bombed out and clearly hurt, throwing nothing back, and when the bell rings you're left scratching your head wondering how the **** there wasn't a knockdown (or maybe there was a KD or two, a glove touch here and there, missed by the ref, or an instance where the guy sat on the ropes unseen for a moment, or went down legit but got incorrectly ruled a slip/foul etc) - there have been plenty. There are times when a 10-9 is just ridiculous.

That said, like with 10-10's, it should be SUPER RARE.

Of course you can have a 10-8 without a KD if one guy has had the snot battered out of him all round.

Look at the 12th round of Froch-Taylor and the first round of Cotto-Clottey as examples. If Froch hadn't dropped him and got the stoppage very late, is it really right that Cotto gets a wider score for a flash KD than Froch gets for beating his man from pillar to post for 3 minutes?

That said, I do agree it should be the exception rather than the norm.

the matchroom refs all had the 5th vs WK 10-8 to Joshua even though their guy took a beating for most of it.

I can’t remember any official 10-8 round scored without a KD.

Did you get that from the "official scoring system", or is that your own rules?

Both. Nowhere do the official rules explicitly specify that you can't score a 10-8 without a knockdown and the practice is time-honored, albeit rare, for as long as there has been a 10-point must system in place for professional boxing judges.
