Over the last couple of months I've extended my boxing library a bit,recent purchases/gifts include.

I enjoyed both the Kimball books,the Ochs ones,crammed with detail,the Toledo books are excellent.Tosches book on Liston is the only one I 've read about him,I enjoyed it. Myler's book is okay with a few inaccuracies in it.
Just dipping into Pep's book ,entertaining.
Haven't started either the Lawton book or Leibling's one.
Anyone here read Jerry Izenberg's Once There Were Giant's?
I'm probably getting that one next.Then maybe Bob Fitzsimmons by Pollack.
Any suggestions?

 

The Fitz book is, of course, excellent.

 

Live Fast, Die Young the Life and Times of Harry Greb by Steve Compton is a masterpiece.

Clay Moyle books are well researched.

 

Havent read Compton's book ,but I have Moyle's Langford one ,excellent.

 

You might like Jacobs beach. I know I did.

And Billy Walkers autobiography. Have you read that?

 

You lads seem to have deep boxing libraries, quick question. Is there a good book out there on the whole Sugar Ray, Hagler, Duran, Hearns period/rivalry? Or at least a book that focuses on it?

 

Pretty sure there is ,long time since I actually read it ,sure the title was 4 kings or something along that line. But its basically following the story s of the guys and then their fights and rivalry's .Was a good ,interesting book .

 

I'm about ten pages into Jacobs Beach.

 

Thank you just googled it, your right Four Kings, by George Kimball. Mentioned on McVey's list. Mostly positive reviews.

 

I missed that on McVey s list apology s. Yes I remember it s a good read. A fair bit about life story's ,their boxing careers and rivalry's. Don't think you'll be disappointed.

 

Got Jacobs Beach which I enjoyed,but George Kimball gave it a blasting in one of his books[The Fight Business],just ordered the Izenberg book," Once Were Giants. Haven't read the Walker book,I've disparaged him as a boxer but I think he 's a decent,honest bloke,his brother George was more skilled and a very sharp man,Mickey Duff respected his brain.

 

The fit z book by Pollack is a classic
The Jeffries and Sullivan were excellant

 

For those of us not immediately familiar with the writers or titles, an indication of the subject matter would have been helpful.

 

Where do you get the time to read all these books?

 

Read a few books recently:

John L Sullivan and his America - This was a good one, gave us a look at Sullivan and a load of context with the country at the time.

The Real McCoy by Robert Cantwell - hated the book. Felt very ordinary.

Stanley Ketchel: Life of Triumph and Prophecy - This was ok, interesting fighter.

In The Ring with James J Jeffries - Excellent as one would expect from Adam Pollack.

Billy Miske: The St Paul Thunderbolt - Very good book on this fighter.

Mooresey: The Fighter's Fighter - Jamie Moore was such a tough fighter in the UK, good book.

Champ in the Corner: The Ray Arcel Story - Liked this one a lot.
