Vanes while I'm not a fan has a hell of a pedigree, especially amateur.
He beat a who's who of guys. Even as a pro, stalled career and all, he's never
been really dominated or blown out and he's sturdy. I'd say this is gonna be a
    workmen like win for Golovkin.

I've always like Vanes.. IMO hes a really good fighter.. I don't think hes ever fought at the middleweight limit.. but hey.. I guess good for him for landing a decent paycheck and exposure.

I think there’s a slight but real chance of a huge upset here.

At 31, Vanes may have grown into a real middleweight frame. We know GGG has been slipping for at least two years, and his team’s choice of opponent doesn’t suggest that they have a ton of confidence in him. Basically, Vanes can come in prepared and outjab and outwork a tired GGG.

What do you mean, duh? Weren't you bashing this fight? I'm pointing out that Vanes has more (now twice as many) people confident in him springing the upset than Spike. I thought some might find that interesting. :nusenuse:

Vanes' last fight was JrMW. He has never fought at MW. his last fight was a loss, and he has been inactive for two years. To top that off, he only has 4 weeks to prep for his first fight at MW against GGG.

    Let that sink in.

 I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Vanes because I remember seeing him fight in the Olympics and he impressed me in his losing effort against the much older and more experienced Aragon.

BTW, Vanes is all-in for legacy here. The purse of just one million is to be split between the parties with GGG obviously getting the lion's share but throughout his campaign to get the fight Martirosyan has made a point to vocalize that he doesn't care about the pay, and will take as low an offer as it takes in order to get picked.

That's pretty commendable. That suggests he sees a weakness he thinks he can exploit in GGG or is maybe just banking on a combination of Golovkin's skills eroding and himself being underestimated - but one thing you can't say is that Martirosyan is swooping in for a cash-grab here. What he stands to make here - presumably well under the quarter million offered to (and balked at by) Spike, and probably in Martirosyan's case with his lack of leverage below an eighth of a million - is still lower than his asking price on the open market, even with a two year layoff. He was already fetching 150-200k in the Lara I and Charlo fights and peaked at nearly half a million in the Lara rematch.

In other words he could probably call Al Haymon and be signed to a rematch with Ishé Smith on the next PBC show for the same money or better, and yet he's pursuing this one doggedly - for reasons other than financial.

Vanes is a consummate pro and still pretty young and well preserved. Out working ggg is not impossible at this stage.

I don't take what the supremacists say very serious.

Anyone who thinks Martisoryan has more than a 1% chance at beating GGG DKSAB or wants to make him look like a credible opponent for GGG.

What makes this fight terrible is that GGG had real options.

He's 32, has been in a lot of tough fights, and has a style that puts wear and tear.'

Answer me this.. Why has he been retired for 2 years?
