Jones will forever and always have the excuse of having lost too much weight too soon. Perhaps he did have a glass jaw but nobody was ever able to get to it until the Tarver II. Hell, even in their first fight Tarver managed to hit him more than all of Roy’s previous fights combined.
As a side note, I’d read a post from a knowledgeable poster on another site that said Roy was sparked out in the amateurs (or maybe sparring) and that his chin was a well known but well kept secret.

I don`t like you mentioning Khan and great in same breath he can`t fight on the inside and yes there were great fighters with weak chins that did help themselves with better defense than Khan and the power Hearns had got him out of trouble compared to the feather fisted Khan, even though Hearns lost to Hagler and Leonard and Barkley he still beat the great Benitez and Khan would of been toyed with at welter by Benitez chinnny or not, Tommy beat Wilfredo at light middle but he was still fast at the higher weight, great stuff.
Williams was wide open for the hook, check the Tyson and Morrison fights always left his right hand low as he jabbed, doesn`t matter how good his jaw was how was he going to take hooks of Tyson and Morrison all night unless he stopped them and how many KO`s did Wiliams have anyway?!

I understand how Khan got you thinking about weak chins. But I don't see the connection between Khan and great careers. lol.

While i'm here Wlad is clearly a great example of protecting your chin at the top level with skill and athleticism.

RJJ never fought a great fighter anyway at least not in his prime so his weak chin doesn`t matter, I didn`t rate Tarver that high and anything after that fight was awful any way you slice it, complete waste of talent.

You read too much into my post, but perhaps I implied something that I didn’t mean to. I don’t consider Khan a great fighter, it’s his chin that got me thinking about great fighters with unstable whiskers. However, in fairness to Amir, he’s had a better run at the top of boxing than most fighters ever will. He’s no bum, just lacked ring IQ and his balls were bigger than his brain.

Yeah, I should’ve reworded my OP because you’re the second guy to assume that I think Khan is great- I don’t. He’s had a good career and is better than his mockers give him credit for but he’s not great. The Khan thread just caused me to extrapolate about really good/great fighters that had Khan-like whiskers.

I'd say it was defence, and maybe a bit of stamina/concentration rather than chin.

Steward addressed his issues......and no trainer can improve a chin.

I'm not sure a heavyweight can be 'chinny' anyway, not even Price.

    The Great Joe Louis.

Dropped by: Braddock, Galento, Buddy Baer, Jersey Joe

    Hurt by: SMW Conn

Hard to think of a more respected fighter with such a lousy chin.
