I've been reading Steve Bunce's book and he details a lot on the career of John Conteh .. among the items I read was that there was semi-serious talk in 74 - 75 of Carlos Monzon moving up to challenge Conteh at 175. I never read that before .. makes a fascinating matchup .. thoughts on that one ?
Conteh was a fine lhvy, probably faster than Monzon and a little taller,he could box and punch,he beats Carlos at175lbs.
Hay you read a lot of Steve Bunce ? He's from your side of the pond .. interesting guy with a lot of history ..
I agree 100%. I am of the opinion John gets severely underrated due to the stacked 175 pound era in which he fought. He was terrific and very, very tough.
He is the front man for promoter Frank Warren's Box Nation onTV,he is quite knowledgeable but has an irritating squeaky voice which gets higher when he get excited. He writes a column in a national newspaper, better to read than to listen to!
Was just about to say exactly the same thing, He has the ideal voice for print. After your defence of Calzaghe but calling Eubank and, especially, Naz and Broner 'turds', we're on the same page tonight. I find Colin Hart's nasal Hodgsonesque voice iwwitating too but doff my cap to him for knowledge.
Conteh gets rated extremely highly on this forum h2h but his resume appears very underwhelming too me. And from doing research on him, he didn’t have a very long prime.
He knows what he is looking at, but I find his sing song South Wales accent rather wearing after a while.
