IT's a brutal call .. Saddler had slight edges in height and reach. He had a ton more in the ring experience .. He was the better puncher by a significant amount but Sanchez was super tricky and his chin was granite .. Sanchez may be able to outbox him but machismo may force to fight Saddler's fight .. it's an all time great featherweight match up for sure ..
Besides Pep, and several efforts up against Lightweights, Saddler was usually "the Man" in his fights. Sanchez would have to be ready for this type of Saddler, if a Sanchez vs Saddler fight occurred: Fight #4: 1951-09-26 : Willie Pep 125 lbs lost to Sandy Saddler 125½ lbs by RTD in round 9 of 15 Location: Polo Grounds, New York, New York, USA Referee: Ray Miller 5-4 Judge: Artie Aidala 8-6 Judge: Frank Forbes 4-5 Al Abrams, sports editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, called the fight "nine rounds of the worst exhibition of unsportsmanlike conduct ever seen in a bout anywhere." Pep and Saddler "wrestled each other to the canvas several times and through the ropes three different times. Hitting on the break was nothing by comparison with the heeling, open-glove rubbing, holding-and-hitting, and even hitting when a fighter's back was turned." In the December 1951 issue of The Ring (page 3), editor and publisher Nat Fleischer called this an extremely dirty fight, with "wrestling, heeling, eye gouging, tripping, thumbing—in fact every dirty trick known to the old timers." Referee Ray Miller "let the bout get out of hand," Fleischer wrote. "The pattern of the 'contest' never varied. Pep wouldn't make a fight of it and Sandy couldn't. Pep too frequently backed around the ring and Saddler just as often missed as he kept boring in trying to corner his man. Then when he did, the rowdy tactics got under way and ended only when either both were sprawled on the canvas still wrestling each other, or the referee was outside the ring trying pull the boys apart or both fighters and official were entangled in a pretzel formation on the ring floor." Pep quit after nine rounds, "declaring he no longer could continue because of severe pains caused by a deep cut over the right eye." The New York State Athletic Commission revoked Pep's license and indefinitely suspended Saddler for their roughhouse tactics. The fight was named the sixth dirtiest fight of all-time in the December 1997 issue of The Ring.
Sanchez is arguably the most composed, calm, collected, focused fighter of all time...if saddlers dirtying tactics didn’t work on anyone in history, it would be Sanchez...who didn’t get rattled at all....Sanchez had the mentality of a stone cold assassin
I love Sanchez. Maybe he could pull this off but Saddler was force of nature. I can't think of many fights I would like to see then this one. Saddler had the ability to knock out full fledged lightweights. I believe he KOd future 135lb champion Joe Brown.
The thing is, the Saddler style is not something Sanchez ever had an issue with. As a matter of fact, he thrived on this style. Sanchez had a problem with boxers not sluggers. On paper - to me - this fits Sanchez to a tee. I always say a counter-puncher with a great chin (or great defense) is the bane of every big slugger. I think of great performances like Quarry-Foster, Quarry-Lyle, Lujan-Zamora, Starling-Honeyghan, Ali-Foreman, Watson-Benn and of course, Sanchez-Lopez I & II. I don't believe we would be looking at a KO for either fighter in this scenario, but I would go with Sanchez on points.
My thoughts also, Sanchez wasn't the stereo typical Mexican fighter who walked in, and tried to break a opponent in half with the left hooks to the liver. He had great foot work, could use the jab, and counter to perfection. He also had a coolness to him, and wouldn't get flustered with some of Saddlers illegal tactics, and would respond in kind to it. Sanchez's great chin would enable him to survive Saddlers power, and his defensive skills would ensure he would n't get hit enough too matter. It would be a tough physical fight. But Sanchez would win the decision 12 or 15rds.
Yes. Good point. I consider him as one of the greatest of all time, pound for pound. Certainly top 20. Borderline top 15. How about yourself, bro?
