While you may think that most boxing writers never sparred...Iam yet to come across a writer who not only never fought, but never even sparred; seems like many writers have either participated in the sport involving some contact (amateur competitions, recreational, etc.). here's a list of writers who have definitely boxed in some form or another:
    Ryan Bivins
    Frank Lotierzo
    Lee Groves
    Martin Mulcahey
    Tim Starks
    Gabriel Montoya
    Steve Kim

But what about writers who NEVER EVEN SPARRED NOR FOUGHT? Which writer NEVER even put on boxing gloves? did the late, great A.J. Liebling ever fight?

I'd be surprised if Dan Rafael has even used a punchbag once.

That undercover transvestite Doug Fisher has never thrown a punch in self defense, let alone get in a ring.
For the people who don't know who he is, here is a video of sweet cheeks here acting like the prettiest ***** in the room.

He could probably be used as a punchbag...

I don't think it should be a job requirement. It would help for some perspective, but from their from the outside looking in angle can be beneficial too.
Neil Degrasse Tyson never went to space, but he still has a lot more insight to it as the vast majority of astronauts themselves.

I agree, but that doesn't lessen my desire to punch that smarmy condescending c*** deGrasse Tyson in the face repeatedly. He and Bill Nye are practically unbearable. And that's coming from a space nerd like me.

This has **** all to do with the point of the thread, but I'll never miss an opportunity to pat myself on the back.

I've never gone to journalism school, barely passed English in school, but that's because I didn't pay much attention to any of my classes, no training at all... but just as a hobby, just winging it, I'm a far better writer than Dan Rafael, so is @IntentionalButt not only are we better, we're ****ing levels above his dumpy fat ass. And he's arguably the "best" boxing journalist in the biz. Personally I think ESPN should fire his biased ass and hire us.:D At least I'm honest when I'm being a biased fanboy about something.

Ah, yes. This excerpt below was, dare I say, Shakespearean?

    Marvelous.

Dan Rafael has never ever sparred but he's currently fighting class III obesity. So does it count?

there are plenty of examples in many sports of people succeeding at a sport that they have never played either at all or at a decent level.

The problem with journalists (and with you CST80) is if you genuinely want to be respected as a writer (by folk like me) is the ability to remain impartial which is not easy at all when involves something that you are passionate about. Being impartial is not easy and the writer can be totally oblivious to it.

In football (soccer to the americans!) guys like Jose Mourinho, Brendan Rogers, Avram Grant and Andre Villas Boas have all had success at management but never played the game (Jose was translator for an english manager at Barcelona) before going into management.

In addition to this I think Rummy's videos are excellent at avoiding any bias. Im sure that with his opinions and love of the sport in general conversation he will be biased to his favourites but when it comes to articles and videos he posts he does very well at being impartial and offers little in way of opinion and if he does he is very clear in stating that it is just his opinion and nothing more.

The only thing fat Dan ever fought was obesity, and he lost KO1.
