Better is subjective. Not a fair comparison as wills was way over the hill and demosey was in his prime when he fought Firpo.

I’ll say this...wills didn’t need a typewriter to help him back in the ring to prevent him from losing to Firpo

If wills was as weak as you say, why didn’t demosey knock his block off and end the saga? People out there legitimately thought Dempsey was scared of wills and jack did nothing about it

Wills was an awesome unorthodox fighter. He was very athletic, with really good reflexes. He was great at being balanced enough to quickly slip and counter with heavy punches.

He had a very hard, sharp punch. If it lands clean it’ll put anyone down. Against Firpo, Wills lifts Firpo off his feet with a short right hand punch that he doesn’t even shift his weight into. Firpo looks shocked when he gets hit.

Wills did have a Foreman like tendency to have a squared up distribution of balance and power. He stalked his opponents, threw his whole body into the jab, and had a straight-up composed style of infighting you would often see from George. Although the differences, like their strength, are perhaps vaster than the similarities.

Careful...Dempsey fans don’t want us to believe he was anymore of a threat than Fulton, Firpo , and washed up Willard!

This is true, but you can’t go into the rain without getting wet can you? By comparison Wills fought over Prepared for the rain using a Mack, wellingtons and umbrella.

I am prepared to accept Wills was a very good fighter. I’m just saying I was surprised with his style. As you say, he made use of the technique of the time. Shovel uppercuts, inside mauling and so forth. I had previously imagined he was a fearless free swinging killer.

Wills hit Firpo after the referee had called them to break. That might be the reason for the shocked look.

He was a legitimate top contender who deserved his title chance without any argument. The arguments usually start when differing factions try to establish why he didn't get it.

Firpo was also not in the shape to face Wills that he had been when he challenged Dempsey.

I agree, Firpo was porkier for Wills than he was for Dempsey.

Firpo was a good ticket seller.

Wills would not have presented a whole lot of problems for Dempsey. Too slow.

This seems to be very high appraisal of Wills from the footage we have of Him. You must have a very keen eye to ascertain all these positives of the man on the Madden, Firpo and Uzcudun footage.
I see a man who uses the open gloves of the era, to grip his smaller opponents just under the armpit and yank them into the position he wants to maul them with uppercuts. He seems able to slip the initial telegraphed bombs of Firpo that possessed no follow up but he is unable to dodge the hooks of the second rate knock off version of Dempsey in Uzcudun.
