He can probably sue GGG for loss of earnings. Think about it, if GGG hadn't slandered his name and written to the commission forcing them to ban him (even tho the levels were trace and from tainted beef) then Canelo would have gotten a 20 million + pay day . GGG is responsible for loss of revenue due to slanderous claims which are proven to be false.

well, I though he was juicing but this test clears him of that accusation I guess. Still, the ban was on point, it's his and his team's responsibility to watch what he consumes. Hope the rematch happens in September now

Was found to contain a very high concentration of both cinnamon and ginger, though. That's worth a lifetime ban in itself....

    A) NSAC's new rules mandate a suspension for any positive drug test.

    B) Besides, it's basically impossible to sue for supposed "influence" on a decision made by an independent body. Any suit would have to be for defamation.

    C) Canelo's evidence is far from sufficient. He did have clenbuterol in his body at some point. The hair test doesn't prove beyond reasonable doubt that Canelo never used illicit substances.

    D) GGG's statements were mild compared to many other commentators, e.g. Saunders.

He would only enter into legal proceedings if he was certain he had no skeletons in the cupboard regarding PEDs. Libel and slander rely on establishing defamation of character and it's hard to establish defamation of a likely (in the eyes of the court) drugs cheat, even if the specific claim made against him is erroneous; and all that would influence the pay-out too. So he would have to be certain his record is beyond reproach, because lawyers acting on behalf of GGG, would go seek witnesses prepared to testify - not just on the circumstances surrounding the case, but generally too. Cases like this get messy and court hearings are held in public, so the damage caused by the legal process may be greater than the damage of GGG's assertions, even if they are false.

Also, he's likely to make more money from GGG in the ring than the courtroom...

    Excellent post.

Canelo is struggling to hold onto his sponsors. They will want him as far away from this story as possible. A long drawn out high profile court case is not in his interests.

Of course I forgot to mention, he also has a six months ban for having a prohibited substance in his body - which legally speaking is a strict liability offence. That fact alone would probably render any libel case fruitless.

Imagine him suing Golovkin and team GGG proving in court that everything they said was true. What a story that’d be.

On a more serious note, I guess a Canelo could go down that route, but to what effect ? He did have clen in him, ban he got is totally justified, yeah it’s still an insult from Genady to publicly state Canelo is a cheat but i’d bet they all want this story to be done and over with.

Which is how Pacquiao sued Mayweather for defamation and won.

    This. Great post.

The automatic defence to slander is "it's the truth."

Canelo failed two tests, ergo, there's a pretty good de facto case that Canelo is a cheat.

Assuming that the court doesn't accept that failed tests are enough to base a statement that "he's a cheat", om, the second defence is that "it is my opinion that he's a cheat." Again, it's not unreasonable to hold that opinion given the failed tests.

Furthermore this " So he would have to be certain his record is beyond reproach, because lawyers acting on behalf of GGG, would go seek witnesses prepared to testify" is spot on. If canelo did cheat, can he be 100% sure that there isn't some disgruntled party somewhere who knows he cheated and would be prepared to come forward? Things could become disastrous if (for instance) Mr Pepe the janitor came forward and testified that he's been throwing out those empty bottles of clen since 2012, and look, here's one with canelo's fingerprints on them.

Finally, from Canelo's perspective, public opinion needs to forget the clenbuterol incident. Does he really want this debated in public for the next 2 years? When there's evidence against him? I think not.

If anything GGG could sue Clenelo for loss of earnings, because it was PEDnelo who tested positive and it was Chemnelo that withdrew from the match.
