GGG has 19 title defense, and unless a massive upset happens, will wake up Sunday morning with 20 middle defenses, trying Bernard Hopkins.

Its an amazing accomplishment for both men. No question there, but I do have a question on how Hopkins made 20 title defenses in a row.

Get your popcorn out because this one could be interesting...

Hopkins had a No Contest title defense against Robert Allen. Does that count in his streak of 20?

A NO Contest to me is NOT a title defense; it's a NO CONTEST!

Bernard Hopkins vs. Robert Allen (1st meeting)
1998-08-28 : Bernard Hopkins 159 lbs fought without result Robert
Allen 160 lbs by NC at 2:57 in round 4 of 12

Location: Las Vegas Hilton, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

    Referee: Mills Lane

    Judge: Glen Hamada 30-27
    Judge: Bill Graham 29-28
    Judge: Mike Glienna 28-29

International Boxing Federation Middleweight Title (Hopkins' 8th defense)

    Time: 2:57

Weights: Hopkins 159 lbs, Allen 160 lbs

    - Fight ruled a NC after Hopkins was injured when accidentally pushed out of the ring by referee Lane, who was trying to break up one of the many clinches.

The guy asked a legitimate question on a board that has exhausted and recycled a lot of questions.

It's actually an interesting question and I dont know what the answer is.

But the best you can come up with is a sarcastic and completely irrelevant answer.

He a former rabid Pacquiao hater who’s now a rabid GGG hater. He posts in GGG threads almost exclusively. Basically, he lives a sad, dysfunctional life and is badly in need of therapy, the poor man.

Technically, a NC is not a title defense. Draw, however, does count as one.

Yes he defended his title against Robert Allen. It just ended up in a NC. Hopkins retained the title after it was all said and done.

They had a fight. The fight ended. Hopkins walked out with his belt.
NC used to be basically draws. Boxing has a very strange history in which the evolution curve has been quite(high? I'm at a loss for words here)
Literally, go back in time and guys would have tons of NC on their records. Why? Because if after the agreed upon rounds were over, and neither fighter would get the stoppage, they would declare it as a NC.

NC is not really that well defined. A NC in one state(USA) could easily be a "draw" in another.

I would lean towards no. But also I would not count any of Golovkin's "regular" WBA title defenses while Sturm was the actual WBA champ. The "regular" WBA title is more like a mandatory position.

Nominally, a NC is not a part of somebody's record. That's why it only appears sometimes, in a bracket.

    Here you go.

Does GGG with the regular WBA title belt really have 19 Title defenses?

    Does it matter?

A fighter should be judged on how many top level fighters he beat, and competed with.

These 'record' chasers are not fan friendly fighters.

No I wouldn't regard it as a genuine title defence. While that NC wasn't his fault after being pushed out of the ring you can't really regard it as a successful defence.

As for Golovkin's 19 defences, he doesn't really have 19 defences. 1 was a draw vs Canelo most thought he won though some didn't. Either way officially that isn't a successful defence.

Golovkin had 10 regular WBA title defences. The WBA regular title isn't a genuine world title, we all know that. If you disagree then I assume you believe the current WBA regular champion Murata is the real WBA champion and not Golovkin.

personally, i would give it to hops. he did do everything in his power to defend but was prevented from completing the task, by an outside force not connected to the opponent.
