Good effort. I think there's a reasonable case not to rate him, due to lack of info, but this doesn't really make sense. Dempsey wouldn't give black fighters either a shot either, and though Corbett fought Jackson to try and get a shot, he never gave black boxers a shot either and was likely more racist. You could be the greatest boxer of all time and a giant racist jackass.
Dempsey denied blacks title shots but I don't think he was a racist per se.He was very friendly with both Tate and Godfrey and spoke well of Langford and Panama Joe Gans.
Decent. Everyone in your top 25 would make my top 35. Guys who I think are too high: Wlad #5 and Frazier #9, a little high. Ellis at 28? Maybe your worst call. Ingo at #32 and Tucker at # 34, I'd push them both way back. Conn at #44? I would not place in the top 60. Povetkin at #29? Interesting. A little high. Young at #27? Interesting, not seeing it though as he lost too often. If Fury fights again, you'll move him down. I don't think Moore should make the cut. Guys I think who are too low: Vitali Klitschko, Ike Ibeabuchi, Gene Tunney, Anthony Joshua.
I think that Vitally Klitschko, Gene Tunney, and Ken Norton are too high. Max Baer, Jack Sharkey, and Sam McVea are a bit too low. Generally a good list.
Well I disagree with many places here but it's just an opinion (like anyone's). It's impossible to properly rank 20 HWs of all time, let alone 50. One can always find arguments for ranking certain fighter higher or lower than the others do.
Apart from my inclusion of Jackson over Wills, I have the same top 25 as yourself. And all of them are within five places of the same order, with the one anomaly being that you have Wlad a huge ten places higher than I do!
What’s wrong with Ellis? He won the 8 man WBA tournament to win the WBA title. Beat good fighters quarry and bonavena, then defended his title against hall of famer Floyd Patterson. Perhaps he could be a little lower, but his WBA tournament alone rates him in the top 50 comfortably. Who would gene Tunney be above? Not much of a resume at heavyweight, retired too soon Conn beat bob Pastor one of the best heavies of the 40s, and savold. Also nearly beat a prime joe Louis Tucker only lost near his prime to Tyson and Lewis in a good heavyweight era Young beat foreman, Lyle, robbed against shavers, and I thought edged out ken Norton. Some think he beat Ali Wlad went undefeated for 10 years, had nearly 20 title defenses, beat the best of his era outside his brother. Head to Head he rates very highly with his size skills and power. Where would you rate him?
and holyfield is too low also. two-fisted, every punch in the book. his overhand right is also noteworthy.
Holmes was fading at this point and had been run very very close by a green Witherspoon. He was soon to start struggling with lesser opponents than (an in shape) Page. It would have been an interesting fight at that time. Another thing to remember is the WBC had dropped title fights to 12 rounds which would hurt a guy like Holmes and help guys like Page and Witherspoon and co. Holmes opened at 8-5 fave in 83.
