Here's a damn good fight from 1978 in Madison Square Garden. Bennie Briscoe vs. Vito Antuofermo. New York rules on a rounds basis.

5-4-1 Vito Antuofermo

As you can see by the score this was back and forth and I had it a lot closer than the official scores. On mine everything hinged on the final round, which Vito pulled out on the tiring Briscoe. Right at the end I could hear the ringside announcer mention he had Briscoe taking it. I think his score and my score properly reflect how close this fight was as opposed to the official scores, which I believe to be 7-3, 7-2-1 and 6-3-1 all for Vito. I like Vito but this was close.

 

Here is the Jose Napoles-Hedgemon Lewis fight on youtube. The minute's rest is deleted so it is 15 rounds straight of good, tactical boxing. Here we go on the California scoring system of one point for a round, additional point for a knockdown (N/A in this case) and no points for an even round.

I recall seeing this on delay when it took place back in '71 or I saw it early in '72 and I had it for Napoles but much closer. I must be more appreciative of Napoles' body work these days, but official scores were closer than mine. It was 8-7, 8-6 and 9-4. Anyone see this one?

I remember pre-fight thinking Honeyghan would at least outwork Starling and maybe overwhelm. Starling had recently been sparked (albeit way after the bell) by Molinares.

3rd - starting to remind me of ali-foreman. Honeyghan doing too much work with little reward. Starling stunned a little at end, but his round.

Don’t think it was going to be Honeyghan’s night either way, but Duff took him out of his game and Starling started rolling.

6th - Honeyghan on his bicycle. He was never going to outbox Starling. Best Starling performance? (Jose Baret fight - Baret was a novice). Knocked Honeyghan’s mouthpiece into the 15th row.

Honeyghan comes out for the 7th with Tommy Hearns’ legs.

Duff realizes his instructions for 5 & 6 were horrendous. Changes course. Don’t recall much of Duff working a corner. Not impressed.

8th - Honeyghan might have a broken jaw.

Good stoppage by Mills Lane.

I'm inclined to believe this is Starling Best performance.


Gomez TKO 9 Davila

I always try to like Gomez because he was such a brilliant fighter. But wow, if he's not the dirtiest fighter I've ever seen, he's in the top 3. Always trying to hit his opponent when they are down. That's why I enjoy watching Sanchez kick the **** out of him at least once a year.
Didn't bother to score. Don't think I could give Davila a round. Davila gets shut out and stopped, but never ceases to impress me.
Gomez's balance is perfect. Very offensive, but never too heavy on the front foot long enough to be in any danger.


Cuevas W15 Shields

Going to re-watch and score. It felt like Cuevas to me, but Shields did a lot of good work. If Shields could punch even a little bit, Cuevas would've had major problems. Great fight.


Greg Page TKO 8 Coetzee - Page was hit and miss, but when he was on, wow, terrific fighter.

1st round - Pedroza a little of his game. No nut shots yet. This version of the fight is catching some between rounds talk between the announcers. I’m led to believe that Tim Ryan is offering Gil Clancy a blunt.

I liked Pedroza when I was a kid, but as soon as the going gets even a little bit tough, he pulls out his dirty bag of tricks.

This raw feed between rounds is awesome. Tim Ryan looking for Pedroza’s wife a “pretty lady, a little large”. Apparently Pedroza liked to motor boat. Who knew?

Disagree with Clancy. Gave Pedroza the 11th.

Pedroza coasted a bit in the 13th despite clearly being behind on the cards. Sanchez lights this version of Pedroza up.

Pedroza had the WBA in his pocket. Like other fights, repeatedly warned for fouls but never penalized. Huge advantage.

Lockridge takes the 15th. Pedroza fighting like he knows he has the Panamanian judge and the referee’s scorecard in the bag already.

Not the worst robbery I’ve ever seen, but I’d challenge anybody to show me the 8 rounds Pedroza could have won.

 

Natonic, looking at your first three points:

1) Starling-Honeyghan

Completely agree, about Starling's performance. Without a doubt one of the best counter-punching performances I've ever seen. Starling kept that high peek-a-boo style with arms tucked in and after a couple of rounds I don't think anyone in the arena couldn't see how this fight was unfolding...except Honeyghan's corner.

2) Gomez-Davila

Gomez and his corner pulled the same stunt on Davila that they would later pull on Eddie Ndukwu. They all crowded around the scale blocking everyone's view and the "commissioner" shouts out a weight and Gomez grabs a cup of absolutely nothing and 'downs' it so he doesn't have to get back on the scale. Davila, just as Ndukwu both said, they had no idea what he actually weighed, but it wasn't the contracted weight.

This bout had plenty of shifts, but it really came down to the fact that Cuevas simply had more heft in his shots. Randy was the perfect foil for him - having a great jaw - but he had absolutely no pop in his punches. With so many of them being taps and sometimes even slaps, it was Cuevas' shots that impressed more and who took the lion's share on my card.

Thanks Scar. I was pleasantly surprised with Shields - Cuevas. Definitely want to score that soon. I'm watching Lockridge - Gomez right now. One of the great questions. Who, How, Why the **** would you defend your title against Gomez in Puerto Rico? Kind of like why would you let Barry McGuigan fight in Vegas in the day time.
Thinking about Lockridge. It's a shame he's most remembered now for crying on YouTube. If you want to remember him post career, at least remember him for sparking a guy at a strip mall.
Interesting stuff about Gomez and the weigh-in. I'd never heard that before. I give him his due as an All-time great, but a dirty mofo I can't warm up to.
Anyway, Lockridge was hard done by fate. He beat Gomez no doubt. Probably beat Pedroza in the first fight. Imagine if he had Gomez and Pedroza on his resume? In his first fight with Tony Lopez, of course in Sacramento, he had Lopez on the canvas for 16 seconds (I timed it), and lost a controversial decision. Fate was not kind to Rocky.
I watched Chang vs Zapata I. Scorecard is on my other computer, but I had it 145 - 142 for Chang (missing 3rd round scored even). I "get" Chang. His ability to get across the gap and go to work may be second only to a prime Duran. His style just doesn't appeal to me. I promised myself I'd get back to watching fights, not worry about holes in my knowledge, and just watch guys I want to watch.

Edit: Lopez wasn't down for 16 seconds, he was given 16 seconds. Iffy, not egregious.

 

Natonic, I scored Lockridge-Gomez about a year ago and this is my score and what I wrote. It pretty much rehashes what we've talked about here already, but worth noting and asking those "why" questions again.

The problem with fighting Gomez in Puerto Rico is that anything goes. He is pretty much allowed to do what he wants. All the low blows and holding didn't get as much as a caution from the ref. How did Duva agree to 3 latin judges appointed by the WBC? Was he not aware of what Gomez was allowed to do to Zarate? Was he not aware of the weight-rigging in the Davila and Ndukwu fights. Rocky was the champ. Duva should have dictated the conditions and the officials at least.

 

I watched Chang - Zapata I a couple days ago. That was disappointing. Surely not the first Chang fight I should've watched in a long time. I've since watched Chang TKO3 Lopez, and Chang TKO3 Zapata. These were much more of what I was expecting. I get the Korean Hawk thing, but I think his attacks are much more sophisticated than Pryor's. The Zapata I fight was in between the Lopez and Zapata II fights. Which begs the question, what was wrong with Chang in the first Zapata fight (I had him winning anyway, but not a great performance). He seems like a nightmare matchup for Zapata. Just don't see Zapata having the firepower to keep him off of him.
These fights gave me a better appetite for more Chang. I'll probably watch him soon against my boy Chitalada. I watched one of those years ago. Don't remember much.

Ramirez TKO4 Rosario

Great fight I've probably only seen once since the original airing. What a hiding Rosario gave him in the first two round. 10-8 rounds. First one could have been 10-7 even. I noticed one heavy bodyshot at the end of the 2nd round that may have turned the tide earlier than it appeared. Ramirez came back strong in the 3rd and took the round. Total war in the 4th. I began wondering why Rosario didn't box and start banking rounds. He either just got swept up in it or was feeling the starch go out and felt the need to get Ramirez outta there quickly. It shows what a puncher Ramirez was. A few years later Rosario withstood that brutal beating from Chavez for 11 rounds. Rosario had a lot of boxing ability but fell in love with his power. He was a great pitcher but not as great a catcher.

This fight and Juan Meza - Jamie Garza on free tv, different channels the same afternoon. Those were the days.

 

I scored this 9-5-1 for Lockridge. Key point is, I had it 8-2 for Lockridge after 10. So on my card, Gomez needed a knockout going in to the 11th round. His rally was nice, but certainly not enough.
Duva did a lot of whining after fights, but the Duvas are to blame for this. Fight Gomez in PR, for the WBA title with 2 Panamanian judges?!!? Two of the judges gave Gomez 148 (including Canadian Guy Jutras). Which means they only gave Lockridge 2 rounds clear. Absurd. Criminal.
