"...a relativity easy career against mostly cheese puffs" ...Mainly because unless you could capture any of the MW names in a net & throw them into the ring they were all hiding under their managers skirts...
Golovkin is a pressure fighter. Of course his style revolves around his physical talents. Pressure fighting is the most grueling style to fight in.
Or he just understood Canelo was faster, so he played to his own tactics, not one created by a "boxing expert" like yourself.
Far from downhill but slowly moving in that direction. I think GGG has maybe 3 more top elite fights in him and after that he will start to appear below average compared to his past performances
True but his leg did the stank move last night in the first round so he can be hurt. He might not stop moving forward to kill you but he can be caught
I like your sentiment but I see GGG slowing down. He is taking more shots that are having more impact than they did a few years ago.
Here's a thought! Could it be that fighters today are fighting and staying competitive well into their 30's because they haven't 80-100 fights by the time they're 30. You have fighters today that are 35-36 years old and have less than 40 fights. I think this is the reason for some fighters longevity.
GGG clearly isn't as good as he used to be. Just use your eyes, don't pretend he's Hopkins or Klitschko because every single expert as well as the industry realize that GGG is past his prime. He still got the early KO against Vanes, showing his power is still there, but his timing was poor and he got hit a lot more than usual. It was a bit like the Wade fight - early KO but that certainly doesn't prove that GGG was at his best there either.
It's a good point indeed. With regard to Golovkin though, I guess his amateur fights should also be taken into (reduced - obv. not 1 to 1) account. It's obvious to my eyes that he has declined at least a little - and the whole industry realizes this too.
What makes you say his timing is poor? That is the one thing was wasn't off about his performance. He hit Vanes with 75% of his power shots in round 2 , basically hitting him with every punch he threw. So he took one good hit , its never been that difficult to land a punch on him. Watch the fight. Gets hit plenty by a bum. GG is not past prime , its simply a ridiculous theory to be peddling. This content is protected
? I meant explosiveness, reflexes and speed. Golovkin is more compact and methodical. He doest rely on speed or reflexes as did lets say David Haye.
1) GGG's right hand just kept missing in round 1. In round 2 he hurt Vanes who then became an easy target, that last combo no doubt elevates his %. 2) GGG's style does lend itself to getting hit, but even so that was a lot for one-and-a-bit rounds. Also, such shots didn't usually have the effect of the shots he took from Vanes - GGG was a little stunned at one point. To my eyes it seemed like GGG wasn't seeing them coming and rolling with them. 3) About GGG being past prime, basically the whole industry thinks so. Do you think you know so much better that it's "ridiculous" to disagree with you? Saunders: GGG is "old" and "past prime" - 2017 “Golovkin is getting old, isn’t he? He’s almost 35,” said Saunders to IFL TV. “He’s shown to be an ordinary man…Just let him get to that certain age, 35-ish, and now he’s that age." Froch: "Golovkin, his best days may be behind him." - 2016 "I think Golovkin is just past his best" - 2017 Jose Reynoso, Canelo's trainer: "Golovkin has already reached his top and as they say in my ranch, ‘Old Chango [******] does not learn new stuff'." Kellerman: "Golovkin might be getting old" - 2017 etc.
Women hit their prime at 35, men are past prime (biologically) by 25 or so. Only the facts that boxers don't have 100 fights by 35 and that conditioning techniques are better make a 35 yr old boxer feasible.
