This was a real gem, Russ. Takes you back to a day where there was no abusing each other at weigh-ins or post-fight interviews, there was no boring posturing or shoulder-rolls. Just two tough contenders fighting in Madison Square Garden on national TV who wanted to put on a good show in the hopes that they would be asked back. And they did put on a damn good show. Cool seeing a young Victor Valle in Stable's corner.

 

You're one of the first people to digest it in a long time, I don't think this one's ever been on the net before.

Really does take you back... there's an authenticity to the game in that day that's completely lacking from modern day boxing. You can feel it even through an old, no frills TV broadcast with low key commentary. Sigh. How things have changed.

 

A younger Curtis Cokes, and his Manager Doug Lord, went up to New York to solidify a shot at the Welter Champion, Griffith or Rodriguez, and took on Jose Stable in a TV fight and lost. Cokes' boxing fans in Dallas were very disappointed. Stable was the superior fighter that night.

"Jose Stable of Cuba beat top welterweight contender Curtis Cokes of Dallas, Tex., last night with a savage hooking attack to the body and head for an upset unanimous decision in their nationally televised fight at New York's Sunnyside Arena. Cokes started off with long left jabs as if to win the bout with comparative ease. But Jose began a close-quarter bob-weave hooking attack in the 3rd round that caused Curtis to hold three times because of body blows. Stable continued his attack in the 4th and had an edge in the 5th. Cokes knocked Stable back onto his heels with a hard right in the 6th, but the Cuban came back and gave Curtis a thorough battering in the 7th and 8th, although he lost the 8th on a low blow. Stable took the 9th on harder punches and Cokes seemed to have an edge in the 10th because he knocked Jose into a corner with a left-right combo to the jaw." -United Press International

Cuban infighter Jose Stable was probably more suited to 140 lbs. He certainty had talent beating quality contenders such as Charley Scott , Kitten Hayward and future champ Curtis Cokes. Like his compatriot Jose Naples his skin let him down. However Stable had trouble's outside the ring and was sentenced to life imprisonment for trying to kill a policeman in 1981.

To say they "have a go" at one another is an understatement. Being put on TV in the early to mid 60's must have been like being on a PPV today... it must have been seen as very desirable by fighters and their managers, a new widespread platform to showcase your wares to the whole world through.

 

Great fight and great to see nearly the whole broadcast. It's hard to imagine that someone like Stable wouldn't be a world champ if he was fighting today. It's funny you should mention ppv because Stable shared top billing against Brian Curvis in London in 1966 with my dad against Felipe Gonzalez. In fact it was a triple header with Johnny Pritchett taking on Johnny Torres. Stable was stopped in that one on cuts in a fight that by newspaper reports said it was just starting to get interesting. Back to the ppv. This show was the first ppv in Britain, yes way back in 1966.
