Some of the Bobby Chacon fights were great fights also Castillo-Corales the first Gatti-Ward, for Heavyweights I loved Foreman-Lyle, Marciano-Walcott 1, and Louis-Walcott2, Duran-Leonard 1 as far as significance & action, intellegence, skill Ali-Frazier 1 significance & action, result I think Hagler Hearns 1st rd may have been one of the best rounds ever but rd 2 was a blow out so in the top 10 as far as significance and action as a round Yes but not the finale
I think it rates higher if discussing greatest round ever. That first round rates, I think. I personally don't rate it as the best fights of even the Four Kings series. I'd rate Duran/Leonard I, and Leonard/Hearns I as better fights. At the time, it was highly dramatic. But a re-watch years later shows a fight that started getting onesided in the 2nd round. Too many great 15 round, and even 10 round fights (Coralles-Castillo, Gatti-Ward), to rate a 3 round fight as the greatest IMO.
Agree entirely. Doesn't even compare for instance to a fight 5 months earlier, Rosario vs. Ramirez 2.
Not even close to the best fight ever .. How could it be when a fighter gets injured in the first round .. Sure it was action packed but Hearns fractured his hand in multiple places in the first round .. fight over right there and then ... different outcome if he doesn't break hand .. meaning it goes longer IMO ... put it in context
The Division was in its glory years giving the fight a nod as one of the best. As other stated, technically it wasn't. Louis vs Schmelling I & II could be considered greatest in that it was literally nation vs nation represented by both as well as great action. Louis got his azz whooped, then next fight just came out and ruined Max in under 3 minutes. Significance wise, I'd put those ahead, not on action. Too many great action fights...asking to name the best fight is like asking me which one porn star would I most like to bang. Damn, name just one?!
What we had with Hearns - Hagler was a fight that surpassed the hype for once no matter how brief. The first round contained more action and excitement than most fights have in however many rounds. What we also had was the two greatest fighters P4P at that time getting it on with both in form and on fantastic streaks. They also had a deep seated long term animosity for each other which led to some genuine feeling in there. It was a Superfight and then some. Was it the best ever? No fight is. Boxings been around forever and what floats one boat might not float another. When you add up the sum of all the elements however it was one helluva show any which way.
yes because it didnt go on for too long with a lot of flat periods like Ali Frazier 1. Even Ali Frazier 3 went on a little too long. a lot of people dont like fights that are too long, even fights as good as Marciano Walcott Hagler Hearns was the most electrifying of them all with no flat periods, but instead only grew more intense and dramatic like the time when the Doctor looked at Hagler's face followed by Hagler upping the pace and ending the fight. Could anything be better? and that three year wait on top of that It was per-fec-shun! Runner up Robinson Lamotta Norton Holmes which are classics
For me, yes, the greatest fight of all time. Watching it will get you hyped and in a far greater mood than you were before watching it.
Fantastic 1st round probably my favourite first round but as already stated the fight was still exciting after that although still exciting you always had the feeling hagler's chin had taken the best shots hearns was gonna land and hagler would stop him
What made it a even greater super fight to remember was after 3 yrs after when they were supposed to fight it exceeded the hype. Not like Mayweather vs Pacquiao which was 5 yrs too late and a snooze and Golovokin vs Alvarez which was ruined by the controversial scoring.
I could not agree with this more. The fight was over as soon as Hearns broke his right hand. Exciting as it was, I would not consider it even remotely as the greatest fight ever. In order to hold that ranking I have to witness sustained greatness for a good portion of the fight. Hearns / Hagler was a blast of a fight, great to watch, but when I look for classics all timers, I am looking at Duran/Leonard 1, Hearns/ Leonard1 , Schemling/Louis 1, Ali / Frazier 1.......ON and ON. No way Hagler / Hearns can top those.
I don't think "the fight was over as soon as Hearns broke his hand in 1st round" (which is a hindsight assessment anyway). I distinctly remember there being further drama due to a real possibility than Hagler's cut would result in a stoppage win for Hearns.
It's my favorite fight ever, regardless if it's "best" or not. Round 1: one of the best rounds ever. Round 2: less memorable...only because it was following something so amazing. Round 3: when the doctor looked at Hagler's cut, I thought there was a strong chance Hearns was going to get the TKO win and I felt Hagler had to finish it that round or at latest the next. No fight before or since has had me so excited and emotionally involved.
