Who would beat Golovkin at MW, past or present?

GGG throws more jabs than anyone in boxing RJJ and Toney never met a constant jab like that and Jones didn`t like constant action and fighting at a fast pace.

 

Hopkins in an ugly, smothering, boring fight where he eeks out an SD.

Micheal Nunn would make him look silly for like 5-7 rounds then get knocked out.

I mostly favor Hopkins just keeping things tight, spoiling and nullifying Golovkin's work getting inside landing sly body shots.

Hard to say, impossible really. Golovkin in his prime could beat anyone, he had the output, accuracy, footwork, power that not many could resist for 12 rounds, GGG VS Hopkins is a toss up, would be a close fight and either could take the decision or an unlikely KO for Golovkin, I would actually favor GGG over RJJ at MW mainly because of RJJs chin and he would not be able to utilize his style vs Golovkin who would keep pressing no matter what.

 

The first three? Yes. The last two? I don't think so, especially Pavlik.

 

Yeah Martinez' movement could definitely trouble GGG. But I think GGG would eventually slow him down and stop him late.

Pavlik really didn't move well at all, which Hopkins exposed. I don't think you remain upright fighting GGG in the pocket or not being defensively blessed. It would would have been a good fight (a firefight) but at the end of the day GGG is too skilled for him IMO.

 

1. The Ray Robinson that retired 131–3–1–1 named Fighter of the Year- becoming undisputed MW. Quickness and on many occasions knocked fighters out with a single shot.


2. Carlos Monzon
Beat Benvenuti, Brisco, Napoles, Valdes. 59 KOs out of 87 proves he can hit, but he also outboxed a lot of his foes. GGG IMO doesn't outbox his opponents, he hurts them!

3. No way GGG outslugs nor outbox the switch hitting Marvelous Marvin. When pressure was applied like Brisco did, Haglar circled, spun his man. Outjabbed, hot hustled and went orthodox to left is something GGG hasn't faced.

4. Emille Griffith. Parts of Canelo-GGG fight Alvarez outboxed him, but couldn't sustain it. Griffith would.
I think Benvenuti would also.

5. Hopkins was too multi dimensional @ MW for GGG. To slick, too dirty, tough chin. Masterful Footwork, frustrating clincher, sly-head-butt.

6. Not sure if he Gennady could even find what side of the ring Ray Leonard would be on...the Ray that beat Marvin? It took Haglar 9 rounds to..almost cut the ring off. And Golovkin does it? Not to Ray.

7. Roy Jones jr, was untouchable at that weight. The 1st to register 0 punches landed on him by compu box, made the P4P #1 James Toney look ordinary. RJJ pitches a shut out , not by skill. Just his superfreak azz reflexes and boddy numbing power shots.

8. James Toney...depends on how many racks of ribs he would've eaten that month. Too undpredictable, but I think JT does win.

9. Jake Lamotta too hard headed to get knocked out by GGG, I think that would've been a bloody affair. Wouldn't be surprised if GGG gets tired of landing.

10. Unless he rabbit punches Gman McCellan can't see him outslugging or outboxing Gman. Close fight, I give a points win to Gman

 

You don't think you're looking through ''rose tinted spectacles'' just a bit with this list?

I personally think out of all of them including modern fighters like Martinez, Pavlik,...etc.. Only Hopkins and maybe RJJ i would bet on beating Golovkin.

 

James Toney got a gift decision vs Dave Tiberi who Golovkin wouldn't come close to losing to.

An aging Hopkins gave a good account of himself in an SD loss vs Calzaghe where he had to adapt his style which helped nullified some of Joe's work. I think Ring IQ wise Hopkins would figure Golovkin out.

I think old Hopkins had the most trouble with Kovalev because Kovalev has deceptively quick movement and being naturally bigger frame wise than Hopkins along with power to boot.

I think Hopkins would land those left hooks, go to the body and smother. Although, Hopkins at middleweight wasn't the same Hopkins at light heavyweight. He got smarter and adapted his style some what.

 

Outside of the obvious:

Sugar Ray Leonard gets a decision against him. There's no way GGG can catch him, if Canelos defence gave him trouble he'd be chasing shadows with Leonard.

Right now BJS beats him.

 

I'm a bigger fan of Martinez than GGG but I feel he's a bit too fragile to beat prime GGG. Toney, RJJ, Hopkins are the obvious recent choices. I'd be very confident on the first two. Hopkins didn't have a very high peak, instead he fought at that high level for a very long time, so not too confident there.

Old time fighters will always end up in a era debate. SRR is the greatest IMHO but it's hard to compare completely different eras
