You're making excuses for Fat Boy Don. He was 26 years old and in his prime when he fought Valdes. Nino did destroy Don, no matter how you try to spin it. He knocked him down in the first round with a right hand for 8 seconds. Valdes then knocked cockell all over the ring In the second round and sliced up his face with punches.. Valdes was a much better heavyweight than Don
what do Matthews cockell and lastarza have in common? They were all small and couldn't punch. Probably why they were chosen as Marciano opponents.
They were chosen because they were highly rated and were better at the gate than Valdes was. Later it turned out Valdes was probably better, but he lost a lot of times too. Nobody could tell without looking into the future. Here is an article by Bud Schulberg from 1955 lumping Don and Nino together as the same level. https://www.si.com/vault/1955/09/05...ght-makes-him-the-sports-communications-champ
No that’s not how it happened. I would like to see evidence of first round knockdowns and knocking “all over the ring”. “1955-09-13 : Nino Valdes 207 lbs beat Don Cockell218 lbs by RTD in round 3 of 10 Location: White City Stadium, White City, London, United Kingdom Valdez slashed Cockell's left eyebrow so badly that the stocky British champion was forced to retire at the end of the third round of their scheduled 10-round bout at White City Stadium Tuesday night.”- United Press. In this report there is absolutely no mention of any knockdown. Maybe he was decked, it certainly did not make the associated press. According to this version, Don was simply Forced to retire because of a cut. Jerry Quarry was stopped on a cut by Ali. It’s no biggie. Perhaps I think you are confusing this loss with the beating Don took when he was in much better shape against Kitone Lave in his next fight?
You obviously didn't read the entire page http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Nino_Valdes_vs._Don_Cockell Valdes floored Cockell for an eight-count with a right to the face in the third round.
No they were chosen because they were smalll couldn't punch, made for an easy pay day and low risk for Marciano Valdes was higher rated than all of them The press was calling for Valdes Marciano http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...AIBAJ&pg=5707,2808725&dq=charles+valdes&hl=en http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...AIBAJ&pg=5425,3177503&dq=charles+valdes&hl=en http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...yQEAAAAIBAJ&dq=valdes jackson&pg=5370,1792883 http://news.google.com/newspapers?i..._wFAAAAIBAJ&dq=valdes jackson&pg=5630,1203690 http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...AIBAJ&pg=2538,2386174&dq=charles+valdes&hl=en http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...OgFAAAAIBAJ&dq=valdes charles&pg=5833,2995630
where was the part about him demolishing Cokkell and bouncing him “all over the ring”? It says he took a count. What do you think of Kitone Lave? he gave Don a more conclusive walloping than Valdes or Rocky ever did. Surely you must champion his cause?
Jack Dempsey suggesting Valdes rematch Charles? That’s hardly calling upon Rocky to fight Valdes, I read days ago Edward telling you that Nino chickened out of a rematch with Charles anyway. He had to fight Satterfeild in Ninos place in order to meet Rocky. The other article simply states that after Rocky is done with Charles he would meet The winner of Valdes v Jackson, which is something I think would have happened and should have happened had there been no call for a Charles rematch. The article said if Charles can’t win then neither Valdes or Jackson has any chance. So it’s not like they were held as high as Charles is it?
So you now admit Valdes floored cockell in the first? Valdes whipped cockell much easier than Marciano did. Weill should have chose Valdes over cockell. No excuses
Kind of like ingo chickened out of a rematch with Machen? Weill poorly chose lower rated cockell over number 1 Nino Valdes.....The Truth
I accept that it says Cokkell went down. It puzzles me that there was no mention of it in the actual report. A three round cut eye loss is a shorter fight than Marciano had with Don. Yes. Kitone Lave however, had an even shorter, easier fight with Don that was much more spectacular than either Nino or Rocky had over poor Don. So you must think Kitone Lave whipped Don easiest of all?
Well no because Nino only beat Charles on points in a hard fought scrap with but a round or so difference between them where as Ingo put Machen through the floor. Neither Cokkell or Valdes were regarded any different from each other. One was #1 one was #2. Even from that position Neither were classed as good as Archie Moore.
That's just not true. Stop making things up On October 6, 1954, the National Boxing Association ruled that Nino Valdes was the lone logical contender for Rocky Marciano's World Heavyweight Championship.
Take a look at Bud schulbergs 1955 article. https://www.si.com/vault/1955/09/05...ght-makes-him-the-sports-communications-champ
I've read it. All it says is Moore was better than Valdes and Cockell. We know this. Even though Valdes did come very close to beating Moore in 55 The article doesn't explain why Marciano wasted a title defense on cockell instead of fighting his most logical number 1 contender Nino Valdes. Valdes should have gotten the title shot over cockell. That's my position Weill went with the safe play. The weak hitting fat boy instead of the big powerful fighter with an 80" reach
