Laskey, Levinski, Campolo and Jose Santa. These were big fights. Huge crowds. Also Primo was robbed by Stanley Poreda. So he should be added as a win really. The commission suspended the referee.

The decision given by Mangold was the worst I have ever seen," said Keenen. He can't possibly have any excuse for his action, and I have decided to suspend him and keep him suspended until he learns how to judge a fight."

How on earth can someone put these names into a category?

Some things on this board just make me sick reading it. Its like the awakening from a troll fable, noticing actors taking their act indeed at face value....you just can´t believe its actually happening.

You don’t think Leroy Jones makes the ratings today? Abe Simon? James Beatie?

i bet Ron Stander and Jerry quarry would have thrived in this era. the 1930 boxing scene is likewise depressing

What’s your evidence he was “shot” going into the Haynes fight

He wasn’t even 30 years old

His decision to retire, and subsequent medical problems.

I am surprised that it is even debated!

For my money you cannot dislike Primo Carnera as a boxer whilst celebrating the oafishness of Vitali Klitschko and Tyson Fury.

Where is the evidence that Carnera was unpopular? The US had/has a huge Italian population with a track record of being fight fans.
Was he anymore unpopular than Schmeling , Neusel?

It's true lots of fighters had mobsters among their management in the 30's , but Carnera is the only one I can think of that had fights that were pre-arranged by them.

Fury oafish?? He looked like a HW version of Sweetpea against Wlad. Imagine how clumsy the much more oafish Vitali would have looked against him.

Fury would make Primo look no better than a couple of Stevedores having a rattle down the docks.

Every fighter had fights you could argue were prearranged. It depends how far you want to take it or what motives the person making the claim has.

The Carnera fights that were “claimed” to be pre arranged were not important fights. It’s only claimed they were. The guys in those fights were of the kind that everyone beat, perhaps they needed more convincing to fight a guy that big?

What about the Stanley Poreda fight where the referee was suspended for giving an unpopular verdict over Carnera?

There are far too many convincing fights against legit guys to write Carnera off as a total sham fighter like the characters in the movies. That was hogwash then and hogwash now.

Oh come on! Fury is to boxing aesthetics what he is to in tune singing. He is effective at both but appalling at the same time. He sings loud but it’s not good. Same with his boxing. It works but...he’s a Superheavyweight. A very fine Oaf. Of the highest order. And that is no disrespect to how good he is.

Yes I agree with this absolutely. We can quibble with how it looks but not how it works.
