Seeing as this fight starts in like 24 hours time, what are people's thoughts on it? I think the weight will probably have finally caught up with McDonnell. I'm expecting him to try fight his usual style and then up the intensity in the second half so getting through the first few rounds relatively fresh are vital, if he gets to that point ofcourse. He's going to have to throw some power shots in the first few rounds imo to try and gain a bit of respect from Inoue. I think he's a good boxer and very underated, he's a huge underdog but if he pulls this off, where would the win rank? It would be 3 world title fights where he's been the underdog and won (was underdog both times vs Kameda).
MCD is good and gamed. However at 5.10" and 8 stone 6lbs is ridiculous for an athlete. Inoue is pretty much a KO artist, I expect MCD to be stopped in the 2nd half of the fight and he will move up.
If theres anyone in the bw div that can go to japan and beat inoue then its jamie and maybe tete as well. Inoue isnt a proven puncher yet at bw either, so we dont know the answer to that question yet either, although i suspect he will carry his power through with him. Jamie is a confident kid who doesnt get unnerved by who is in front of him, simply because he knows nothing of the sport or the guys that partake in it. Hes simply in it for the cash. Coldwell will have the obvious gameplan and jamie will try to adhere but inoue will start to land to the body eventualy after mcdonnells concentration wavers here and there and at some point i will pick him to fold. Inoue stoppage in the mid rds.
I think McDonnell might go the distance, but as has been said it’s so tough for him to make the weight and that combined with the monsters body shots is a recipe for disaster.
Inoue late stoppage is my prediction. McDonnell's proved me wrong before but Inoue's is a different class to anyone Jamie's fought before.
I rate Jamie as a similar World Champion to Ricky Burns and Lee Selby - all get pumped when they face opponents better than the average dross they face when winning one of the numerous world titles and defences against pony. On that basis, I think Jamie is going to get pumped tomorrow. I will eat humble pie tomorrow if wrong as it would be a huge win for Jamie.
I think McDonnell gives Inoue plenty to think about, but eventually the Monster starts to walk through him and may force a late stoppage, or otherwise a clear points win. We know that McDonnell is up against it, but it's a new challenge for Inoue as well. The height and reach advantage is huge, and Jamie has shown that he won't be daunted by fighting on the road as an underdog. Inoue seems a different breed from Kameda though, but all weight-hoppers eventually hit a wall where they are no longer as effective. With Inoue I think that will be north of 118 though. The weigh-in was interesting - McDonnell was gaunt and drawn, while Inoue looked like he'd turned up for a photoshoot. Normally that would seem a negative for McDonnell, but I remember when Scott Harrison turned up for the weigh-in with McCullough like he hadn't eaten in days, but when it came to fight time he looked like a welterweight. It's not got a lot of media attention over here, but make no mistake if McDonnell pulls this off it's in the same bracket as Stracey-Napoles and Buchanan-Laguna, and not too far off Honeyghan-Curry.
McDonnell looked terrible at the weigh in. Must have gone through hell and practically starved himself to make weight. Even though he’s got a day or so to put on a bit of weight and rehydrate, it’s got to have a detrimental effect on him some point in the bout.
