Ok so there's a thread on boxers who failed to live up to expectations, let's do the opposite. What are some boxers you never rated/thought they would fail but actually went on to do great things. For me, Fury is one guy, thought he'd definitely be exposed at one point or another but he just kept going.
This, and this is all relative - but Jeff Horn exceeded my expectations against Manny Pacquiao. I think the ref has a lot to do with this, but Horn definitely put in a much better performance (rough or otherwise) than I expected too. I thought he was just going to be out of his depth no matter what he did.
I thought Canelo was going to destroy Golovkin, boy was I wrong. Canelo got beat up. I thought Ward was going to destroy Kovalev, boy was I wrong, Ward needed judges and other officials to get the win, also pubic shots did Kovalev in the second fight I thought Joshua was going to destroy the old man in Wlad coming off a long layoff, boy was I wrong. Joshua despite being younger went life and death with a 41 year old who almost knocked Joshua back to the stone age. I could go on.
Yes horn definitely. At the time I never thought tszyu could beat shamba and Judah based the Way he lost to Philips.
Loma against Rigo. Even though Loma was favourite I thought Rigo would make easy work of him. Lost $50 to my friend on that fight. He only watches boxing casually too so even more embarrassing.
Tyson Fury. Of course he can still be a one hit wonder and be worse without his nandrolone, but still... Is he somehow usually fighting close to the level of his opponent or what? Lost to McD. Avenged that one though. Got nailed by Pajkic and eventually won by British stoppage. Got nailed (exactly the same way) by USS, got outboxed and eventually won by mauling. Then he goes on to outbox an extremely passive Wlad to take the Heavyweight crown!? I never expected him to get past any kind of puncher in the ranks. How did that happen?
Joshua - thought he was weak chinned from his amateur fights but showed v Klitschko it’s able to take a huge shot n get back up
Tyson Fury proved me completely wrong, so much as I truly consider him the alpha of the HW division (don't know how true that is now) Errol Spence: I don't know if he so much proved me wrong as I was just waiting for him to step up. Jarrett Hurd keeps proving me wrong and it's getting annoying
