Just watched it and came away a bit underwhelmed, after reading the posts in this thread. Good looking fighter and had a couple decent rounds but mostly just took punishment.

I shudder to think what Cyclone Hart would have done to Canelo .
Willie Monroe as well. Mugabi would have knocked his head off.

Clenelo with his special steak sauce and his custom judges would do very well against Hagler's opposition I think. Let's not forget he's benefitting also from not having a same day weigh in which means he's proportionally larger than the MW of Hagler's day.

His skills are legitimate, and he's built like a tank at MW. His handspeed and countering ability are both top notch as is his defence. I had doubts about his chin but he took some shots from GGG without problems. So knocking him out will be a bit of a problem and anytime he gets to the bell, which would probably be a given, he's got at least one judge with Can-el-O vision glasses on.

I find it hard to evaluate what a clean Canelo could do, because even though peds can't give you skills which he has, they can give you a gas tank which he never had before. They can also help cut weight and retain muscle (hello, clenbuterol) which means that he has a lb for lb muscular advantage on his fellow middleweights who have to cut weight normally.

He may have problems with swarmers like Antuofermo and ATG boxers like Hearns. I don't think Mugabi would be harder than those two, or Leonard for that matter.

His boxing ability is not too notch.
He didn't counter Mayweather did he.
Argument could be made Lara beat him .
An old Cotto lasted the distance and had his moments.
GGG hits hard but is past his best and STILL easily beat Canello.
So where is all the "skills" on display?
What clinic has he put on?
What boxer has he stopped that had an iron chin?
What non stop puncher has he topped?
He is a media creation who sells alo t of tickets. That's all .
I mean Mayweather- who was past his best when they met- easily slapped Canelo around.

Depends how you look at it. Many of the guys who fight at 154 today are probably bigger men than Hamsho and Roldan, etc.

Has the theory that Canelo walks in straight lines without head movement died yet?

I'm gonna say Canelo would do better against Hagler than he did against Mayweather. I don't think he'd win, but I think he'd capable of at least replicating what Duran did.

With all due respect I couldnt disagree more. Duran was far trickier and more dynamic than Canelo is. Plus Hagler didnt fight with his trademark aggressive boxer puncher style as he gave Duran way too much respect although it appeared that a stoppage was imminent after the 6th. I would guess that Hagler wouldnt give Canelo that respect and stops him about round 9 or 10.

Nah earlier than 9 or 10. Make it about 5. Prime Marvin was a beast and a nightmare in the ring.

That's wishful thinking. GGG didn't even come close to stopping Canelo. Duran wasn't a great fighter 154 and up. Canelo is very tricky, but he's a little slow on his feet which makes him look more average against movers like Lara and Trout.

Canelo wanted nothing to do with Triple G until he started to look slow and old. Thats the primary reason I stopped liking him. And I used to be a Daniel Jacobs fan as well. Duran could be useless above 147 but he could be dynamic there too. No one ever knew which version would show up. Frankly you and I will have to agree to disagree.

If Canelo waited for GGG, what does that make Hagler with Duran?

Hagler didnt wait for Duran. I have no idea how old you are but I lived through that time. Duran wasnt even on Hagler's radar. Duran had lost to Laing at 154 but came back big against Moore. Bob Arum, who was Hagler's promoter at the time saw how close Hags and Duran were in height so he came up with a massive moneymaking scheme and the rest is history. Dont believe me? No worries. Look it up yourself.
