I did change my opinion on Holmes. I started on this forum when I was 18 years old in 2005...I am almost 32 years old now. Opinions change. I came to realize how great Holmes was. When I was 18 I also used to think 185lbere could beat superheavyweight greats. Now I realize that was pure hogwash.

It’s a shame you haven’t grown wiser with age and continue to think Dempsey is immune to criticism. Take off the blinders

I already admitted I had an agenda. Unlike you I dont try an insult peoples intelligence by camouflaging threads like you that are so easy to see through to get my agenda across. I'm a what you see is what you get kinda guy. Yes I gave my reason for the Marciano thread and I'll say it again now. I'm tired of Frazier getting #### on while Marciano has reached superman status.
I disagree ...Sharkey wasnt mentally strong enough to hang with Dempsey and wouldnt have made it.

 

Great post. You and I agree Dempsey only won 1 round of the first 6. So I believe posters making claims “dempsey put on one of the best body attacks of all time and Sharkey was ready to go” has no basis based on the reflection of the scorecards


Do you think Sharkey was hurt by the low blow to the metal cup?

 

You said he hits him in the balls. That is visually verifiable as false. Now you're changing the goal posts to "he hit him low". Yes, Dempsey technically hit him low as in on the trunks. The important fact you are leaving out is that Sharkey notoriously wore his trunks high.

 

Dempsey hit him in the balls...he hit him illegally low. Whatever you call it. There’s no doubt. Sharkey turned to the referee while in pain to complain

I like to think I have grown wiser with age.
I realize Dempseys limitations and I also realize his championship reign wasnt much to write home about but Christ almighty you jump on everybody who likes him..who has something nice to say about him. It's like you sit and wait for his name to come up so you can bash the man or even worse you think your being clever and you think of a way to either bring him up or you bait a thread for someone else to bring him up then you jump down there throat. God forbid someone say something negative about Harry Wills though and you act like a family member has been attacked. WTF man

It’s my opinion that that blow 1:07-1:08 did land low and sharkey reaction was genuine

 

Its really not that hard to score a fight. Sometimes I'm amazed at how few do so here, especially on older films. Sharkey was the better boxer, and I think that bothers Dempsey fans a bit.

Here's a clearer view of the multiple fouls. Dempsey went low for sure, the cup might have slide on Sharkey.

Sharkey was down, holding his midsection. Yes, I think the low blow had everything to do with the stoppage. If not for the low shots, Dempsey never lands the sucker punch when Sharkey is complaining to the referee. Protect yourself at all time applies to above the belt.

 

I have always felt that Dempsey proved more of what could have been by his Sharkey and second Tunney fights than by any victory .. Dempsey's best days were past him. Inactivity for years took it's toll .. Sharkey was capable of great performances at his best and this night he was at his very best .. Dempsey showed a ton of heart, guts and talent in this fight and was at least holding his own at the time of the KO .. he came back after taking hi share of punches in the early going and was deep in the fight .. it's a terrific fight to watch ..

 

You should consider rescoring it He, I gave dempsey only the 5th round. Sharkey hurts Dempsey again in the 6th

 

You have to be clear because there is a difference. Did he hit him in the balls or just illegally low? The footage shows Sharkey did not get hit in the balls unless you consider the belly button region to be his testicles. He wore his trunks high which I think was illegal but he got away with it.

There isn't much controversy on Dempsey's part. He punished a guy to the body who wore chest high trunks and made him pay when he left himself open. The first rule of boxing is to protect yourself at all times. Sharkey broke it and paid.
