How do we see the two blows previous to the last? Is Sharkey complaining as much about the previous two blows as the last?

“Punished the body”. Not really. He got badly outboxed, stunned in rounds 1, 3, and 6...and lost 5 of the first 6 rounds according to mine and Mendoza’s scorecards.

I think the footage clearly shows Dempsey hit sharkey low, look at the grimace on sharkey a face. That was NOT a body punch

You seriously doubt Dempsey hit sharkey low with that last punch? Sharkey was some kind of brilliant actor?

How should a guy protect himself when he was just hit low in the balls? It’s a mans natural reaction to reach for his balls after taking a blow there...the referee did a very poor job and should have stopped the action.

    I agree with Mendoza’s view..sucker punch

The only appreciation I have is that last left hook, short compact with perfect leverage...I love the way Dempsey threw it. He was no doubt a great puncher. Pity he went low which takes away from it.

But as far as the rest of the fight...sharkey almost knocked Dempsey out in round 1, outboxed him in round 2, stunned him badly in round 3, outboxed Dempsey in round 4 Dempsey looked groggy and ready to go, Dempsey came back with a good round 5 landing to the body and outworking sharkey, then in round 6 sharkey rocked dempsey again with a combination...Dempsey was far behind on any fair scorecard.

Why am I getting a vague sense you are not Dempsey's biggest fan Suze?
ps I find it ironic that Sharkey, who has a history of low punching should be the victim this time.

Hard to say, he only complained for about a second until Dempsey took advantage of it.

Dempsey was an all-time kidney puncher and not shy about going low either. In a modern setting, this is a NC or DQ.

Sharkey could be dirty too. Skilled, but not very durable. You could say Sharkey was Dempsey's best win, but it's tainted.

For whatever reason, Dempsey best wins are controversial. Willard, Firpo, and Sharkey.

When I watch Dempsey on film, he needs work on defense. Puzzling since he could move well.

I've seen it a dozen times .. I see many rounds very close and Sharkey fading as the bout got into deeper water .. it certainly could have gone either way from that point. Not ruling Sharkey out by any means but even at his best Jack S. was a fast starting , fading sort of guy ..

I'm talking about the body punches that made Sharkey complain. I'm fully aware that Dempsey was losing the fight pretty decisively up to that point.

Fighter's grimace from body punches all the time. Sharkey was a complainer in that fight. It's his fault for wearing his trunks too damn high and not protecting himself. That's his fault. There were no punches to the balls. Had Sharkey wore his trunks at the appropriate height the punches would have been legal.

Not puzzling at all if you are a Dempsey fanatic like me and read everything written about or by the man. To The Mauler, every fight was a HOBO JUNGLE BRAWL for survival. No rules. He said himself boxing with gloves and 3 minute rds is not really fighting. Dempsey ws the real deal and when the bell rang was a beast unleashed. Like he said, he had no time to think during a fight. It is all instinct. You rip, you tear....Nobody in history fought like him. He was EVERYTHING Mike Tyson wanted to be but couldn't. If you doubt me, ask Mike himself. His entire look was patterned after Dempsey. I remember an article on Tyson in boxing illustrated in 1983 when he was an amateur. He was watching the Dempsey-Firpo fight the night Jack died and Tyson said "people thought jack was soft when they met him because he had a high voice. Then they saw him fight and said oh no, this guy is a tiger." Like I say, if you doubt me ask Tyson 'now if you get to meet him or look up archival footage and articles of Mike talking about Jack. I promise you this bring up Dempsey and Mike will like you. Call Jack all the things they do on this thread and watch Mt. Tyson erupt.

I really don't see how you can get that impression from watching all of the available fights we have on film.
