Does Harry Wills have a case to be ranked higher than Jack Dempsey?

I do think Johnson ducked Langford. Yes I do.

McVea and Jeanette I won’t use the word duck, but both unquestionably should have gotten title shots. Bad timing on the part with these two especially Jeanette.

But Johnson has zero excuses for not fighting Sam

What it means is simply we never know the result until the fight has happened.I think Dempsey tears Wills a new arsehole I think he gets him out of there early but its only what I THINK I don't know.

That’s a fair opinion as long as your willing to admit a prime Wills is a huge step up from other big men Dempsey fought like Firpo, Fulton, and near 38 year old Willard

I think the two best wins Wills managed during Dempsey's title reign are over Firpo and Fulton two Dempsey retreads who were also better when Dempsey beat them in more convincing fashion. On paper Wills would have been a real test my gut feeling that Dempsey gets him out of there quick. The Sharkey that a past prime Dempsey ko'd was as good or possibly was better than anybody Wills beat at that stage of their careers.

I’d love to hear your reasons for how the version of Fulton that Dempsey fought was better than the one wills fought. I think it’s a terribly weak argument for you.

    1. Age. Fulton was 29 when he fought wills, 27 when he fought Dempsey. Not a difference

    2. Record. Since losing to Dempsey, Fulton had gone 20-0 with 15 knockouts heading into the Wills fight. How, if any kind of slippage did he show?

    3. Weight- Fulton weighed 210 and 208 both fights

As for the results, Dempsey knocked him out in 18 seconds. Wills destroyed him in 3 rounds breaking his ribs. Kind of splitting hairs aren’t we?

I think it’s clear both fought the same version of Fulton and both dominated him

As for Firpo, both Dempsey and Wills fought him only one year apart. Wills was 35 when he fought Dempsey, while Dempsey was only 28 when he fought Firpo. So Dempsey had a big advantage in youth.

I believe both fought the same version

I think 1915 Langford and McVea are better opponents than anyone Dempsey defeated besides sharkey. Langford and mcvey were top 3 heavyweights in the world when wills beat them officially. Also, A draw with a newspaper decision win in his 15th pro fight against a 1913 Jeanette and 1914 Langford is as good a result as any Dempsey has on his resume.

Fulton was the leading contender for Willard's throne when Dempsey obliterated him in under 20 seconds. Where was he ranked when he fought Wills? Firpo was in top shape for Dempsey ,fat and untrained when he fought Wills who fouled him by knocking him down on the break, something he had a penchant for look it up.
Langford's own manager pleaded with him to retire in1915 that's how prime he was then!"

How long does the" Hate Jack Dempsey" period go on for?
I might take a sabbatical till its over its eerily reminiscent of Mendoza's Johnson threads.

I think Wills could be rated above Dempsey based on the guys he defeated throughout his career, yeah. I'd have to think about whether I would do so, but I'd definitely consider it when comparing their respective QoO.

Where’s your proof Firpo was in top shape for Dempsey but not

Wills was 35 years old and absolutely manhandled the supposedly very strong much younger Firpo. Imagine how strong Wills was in his prime? Firpo didn’t even win a round Nor did he ever have wills in danger. Wills was 35 I repeat.

Just because certain posters find your favorite fighters resume overrated because he ducked the two best contenders of his era doesn’t mean people hate him.

You've implied it throughout the entire thread.

I don't know but at least he was trying and actively showing interest/pursuing. Better than sitting on his ass doing nothing.

The article does say Johnson was 6'2. You skipped over that part.

There is a caption under one of the photographs showing Johnson exercising in the hospital which states he is 6' 2"

I missed that, so I stand corrected on this aspect of the article.
