Does Harry Wills have a case to be ranked higher than Jack Dempsey?

I have plenty white boxers in my top 5

Benny Leonard, Bob Fitzsimmons, Willie Pep make my top 5 p4p of all time.

I think their is plenty of evidence that from 1910-1923, the black heavyweights were better than the white ones.

Wills, Langford, Mcvea, Jeanette, Johnson > Dempsey, Willard, Greb, Fulton, Gibbons

Firpo defeated Willard when he was 42 years old and hog fat. An absolute meaningless win, although for some reason you seem to count these big name wins no matter how far over the hill they are (Like Neuhas Schmeling)

Mcvea beating Harry Wills, Sam Langford, and Jeanette are much better wins than beating a 42 year old Willard

No one can deny Wills was one of the pantheon of great black fighters,to do so is absurd.Myself I rank him just behind Jeannette who is number 2 to Langford's numero uno.

He is wide of the mark here, I thought it was common knowledge you are a huge Pep fan?

Firpo was a dangerous puncher but not in the class of the great Black trio.

Im not surprised Tunney was rated higher than Jeannette ,McVey, and Langford from 1919-1923.
Jeannette retired in October 1919 aged 40!
    Langford was 36 in1919 and 40 in1923!
    McVey was35 in1919 and died in1921!
Langford is overated and in the category of Scholz and Weller?
This is so absurd it doesn't merit further consideration or comment!
Sam Langford has a very solid claim to being the greatest fighter never to have won a world title.
Anyone seriously disputing this either knows nothing about boxing or is so deluded they have no business on a fight forum!

Firpo should receive zero credit for beating a 42 year old Willard. Willard was coming off just 2 ring appearances in the past 7 years!!

Mcvea, Wills, Jeanette, Langford in their primes are far better scalps than beating a 42 year old Willard!

    Langford Overrated? :yikes:

    Lets examine your statement.
" Carpentier achieved at heavyweight a lot more than Gibbons!"

What are Carpentier's three best wins at heavyweight?

There I would have to disagree.

One of those two ring appearances, was a recent win over Floyd Johnson, who was being touted as a potential challenger for Dempsey.

This put Willard back in the mix, and there were even some newspapers calling for a Dempsey Willard II!

Smart match making on the part of team Firpo perhaps, but team Johnson had the same idea, and it didn't work out as well for them!

Come on, Willard was a very out of shape and RUSTY 42 years old with just 2 fights in 7 years!!! He was a farmboy who didn't actually train boxing during his inactivity period!!! Considering he was never even close to being great in his prime, just imagine what was left in 1923 at age 42!!!

Floyd Johnson potential challenger for Dempsey? That's laughable when people like Harry Wills and Harry Greb were waiting in line.

    This is not true though.

Willard has twelve recorded exhibitions in 1922 alone.
I understand that Willard and Greb were very deserving challengers.

You need to understand however, that they were not the only two men of the era who had any merit as potential challengers!

If you wanna give credit to a fighter for beating a 42 year old man who fought 2 bouts in a 7 year period, that’s your prerogative.

I could pick at least 15 men who would have beaten Willard in 1923

Wouldn't the sensible thing to to estimate how dangerous Willard was based on his results, and credit Firpo accordingly?

My judgment would be that Willard was at the end of the road, but he was still worthy of being called a contender.

Dempsey didn’t beat Tunney, so no reason to include him

Billy Wells, Joe Beckett, Marcel Nilles

Wells was the best of these. Okay, he might not have been all that great in the boxing ring, but he could really hit a gong.
