It sounds like he didnt look as out of shape at 230 or so as some of todays guys look at this weight. And his age would not have been two different to what many of todays top contenders are. I really think that we waste most fighters best years nowadays, by not letting them fight other good fighters and having so many titles and stripping of titles.

Youse guys are seriously trying to pretend like the great white hope himself wasn't a racist?

He upheld the colorline because he authentically thought they weren't good enough? Well gee bucko what the **** do you think the colorline is?

Exactly. Jeffries had black friends. Johnson wasn't only an a-hole, he was a pimp, and a wife beater, and a man who said racists things about his own people.

Nothing that I wrote was not true Mcvey and you know it! If you want to add, how about adding the names of the politicians he was tryin to help? You didn't do that...

In addition Johnson wanted to be the only black heavyweight champion in history, and according to Kevin Smith the foremost modern historian on early black prize fighters, gave his kin a bad reputation. Some Black intellectuals of the times didn't like him either.

From what I read, maybe Martin has a case for the victory, or a draw on this fight.

Jeffries said so and he later said he was ashamed of himself for it.Johnson's response to the challenge was supposedly "I aint no cellar fighter". Clay Moyle says in his Langford book that Sam offered the same to Johnson.

Jack Johnson gave a lecture at a KKK meeting. He had very big balls which he liked to empty into white women's arses, this of course is where all the grief he encountered came from!

The Los Angeles Express said ,"Martin was a half a head taller and at least twenty pounds heavier."
Johnson is described by the Herald as ,"keeping his right in reserve ",that it was ,"mostly a jabbing fight."
The Herald said ,"over the course of the first ten rounds Johnson had a shade the best of it with his counterpunching.Thereafter his superior stamina began to assert itself".
" However the 11th round proved to be sensational and the best of the bout.Martin was trying to open a path with his left but he left himself open as he rushed in.Johnson instantly countered with a lightning straight right flush on the chin.Martin plunged forward into Johnson's arms and hung on with the sheer desperation of the beaten man.
It was only by clinching that he saved himself from going down. When the referee broke them apart Martin fell to the floor.,all but out.Referee Stuart pushed Johnson backand began counting."Ed rolled on the floor trying to recover himself. One of Martin's seconds dashed cold water over the prostrate form which was technically a foul.
Martin struggled to get to his knees at seven, and as he was getting up,he had not fully risen, when his legs gave out again and he crashed backward onto his shoulders.Stuart again began to count, and Martin staggered to his feet just in time to avoid being called out. When he rose he was groggy and all in.
Johnson rushed in and partially landed a right, but Martin still weak went down again..He rolled over on his back then slowly rose in bad shape at seven as Referee Stuart kept Johnson away.Martin staggered about the ring in a dazed condition, though he protected himself surprisingly well ,ducking and clinching. Johnson rushed him in a rather wild fashion,Martin his legs all but gone had a quasi excuse to go down again without receiving a punch. As he went to the floor he grasped Johnson's leg,Stuart finally separated them.
Martin rose again, weak and staggering. In the face of Johnson's rush Martin ducked and clinched to save himself.
While holding,Ed wobbled, leaned forward and and pushed Johnson backed to the ropes.Holding Johnson tightly with his arms around him,Martin then grabbed onto the top rope with both hands pinning Johnson's back against the ropes, holding on and smothering for dear life, dazed all but out and helpless. The gong sounded ,saving him from a knock out."" One local paper said, gameness clinching and the bell saved Martin.Another said Martin lasted out the round by hanging on at every possible moment and committing at least two fouls in doing so ,but he got away with them. The gong unquestionably saved Martin who had been down five ."
"One opinion was that Johnson could have finished Martin in the 12th round but he preferred to play it safe rather than attack and risk getting caught himself."
" It is practically certain that Johnson that he could have secured a knockout by forcing matters a little harder and many censure him for not doing so but as the black boy says he was out to win without taking unecessary chances with the money of his backers".
At the conclusion of the twenty rounds,Referee Harry Stuart awarded Johnson the decision and the verdict was met with roaring audence approval, for it was well earned" The Los Angeles Herald Feb 6th 1903.
    "
The Herald further said for his work in the 11 th round aloneJohnsonhad done enough to justify victory."
The Los Angeles Express said,"Johnson so pronouncedly demonstrated his ability to reach his opponent there were few dissenting voices when Referee Stuart gave him the decision.Feb 6th 1903

Three weeks later Johnson defended his newly won Coloured title against Sam McVey over 20rds. Johnson's second for the Martin fight was Hank Griffin.
In summary Johnson deserved the decision and if Martin had not held on for dear life and been illegally revived with water he probably would not have survived the 11th round.

" The Los Angeles Express said ,"Martin was a half a head taller and at least twenty pounds taller." 20 pounds taller?

The San Fran chronical says Ed Martin was slightly in the lead after 10 rounds. Johnson had one big round in the 11th, and then the report says the remaining rounds were even.

If this was scored under a modern ten point must, I'm not sure who won more rounds or who won have won, even if Johnson had a 10-7 round in the 11th.

You need to stop it with that **** Mendoza, it's insane.

These guys hadn't even dreamed of such a thing as a 10-points must system. Why would they box in accordance with it?

Edited to heavier, happy now? Sorry you can't salvage a win out of this, the crowd cheered when Johnson's hand was raised.

It depends McGrain. News papers can give different opinions. I'm okay with the ref's decision here, my point is this was a close fight which could have been a decision either way or a draw on modern scoring.

Based on the report, Johnson played it safe later in the match.

Johnson had quite a few close fights where he got the nod. This was one of them. The crowd seemed to agree with the decision.

It doesn't. It never depends. Inflicting a scoring system from decades later upon a fight that wasn't fought under it in an era that didn't use it is never dependent.

Fighters don't go out to fight under any ruleset or scoring system other than the one that is being used to judge them. You can't make more of a given fight because it might have been different under modern ruleset because the fighter wasn't fighting to modern rules.
