Please don't insult Aus Boxing. Dennis Hogan and TJ Doheny have proudly adapted Aust as their homeland and have based themselves in Aust since the beginning of their pro career. And thanks to Aust Boxing they are both in line for world title shots.
Aust Boxing doesn't get much gov funding. Most of the elite talented athletes go to other sports . However despite this Aust Boxing has and always will punch above its weight.
No it hasn't! For a rich sports mad country with all the advantages, with millions of people, Australia under performs terribly at boxing. Australians make lousy boxers. Maybe ye have it too soft or something?
It's good to see Irish boxers do well in Australia, but Hogan and TJ weren't actually the best we had to offer.
Was over in his corner his head wasn’t in it after what happened to pete a lot would have pulled out and credit for getting in and going out on his shield. He needs three months solid training before even starting a camp and thinking about a fight as big talent just not putting in the work needed for professional game.
Absolutely sickening what happened to Pete, and the others directly and indirectly affected. Fwiw please give him my best. Met him only briefly but he was a thorough gent. Another guy also killed in separate attack in bray. Gang broke into family home in cork and carved up the family with machetes. We really have let ourselves down badly on crime here. Knackeragua on steroids. Hope you not too badly affected and both you and Pete can rebound from this. There's really not much more I can say....
Lecon i will update u on a 2018 view of Aust Boxing not some antiquated 80's view. Yes sadly Aust boxing has been declining for yrs now. The media only gets interested unless they are Football players or Anthony Mundine. UFC is now more popular with even most sporting teams using UFC or Jiu Jitsu coach's to help with conditioning or help with wrestling or grappling style tactic's. Boxing promoter's are also to blame as Fox Sports tried to revive boxing and the local manager's responded with some wickedly horrible mismatches. Rugby League , Rugby Union and Aussie Rules three very popular sports have been in the news with concussion rules and head injuries. And this has led to fear of boxing and led to even further decline in participation. Aust is now a very expensive place to live and the risks are higher than the rewards. Look what happened to South Korea a former Am and Pro boxing powerhouse. Now its a minnow in boxing compared to the Eastern European Countries. Gov funding is so low for Am boxing as the local Am boxing authorities are always fighting among themselves and the big sports can afford to lobby for more funding. Hence our local am don't get the international experience. I can't speak for all Aussie's but our boxing gyms are multi culture. Many of our best fighters were born overseas. Cammeron Sakio Bika and current Aust 154 lb Champ Samuel Colombian and Aust 168 lb Champ Frenchman Faris Chevalier. Anyway i conclude Dennis Hogan and TJ Doherty are both very popular down under and haven't forgotten there roots.
i think lencon is pulling your leg... australian pro boxing is in a much healthier state than irish pro boxing ... although the same cant be said for your amateurs...btw what can you tell us about Luke Jackson?....is he a world class boxer that will test Carl Frampton?
A passionate defence of Aussie boxing Juppity. Obviously my assessment that Australians are a bunch of privileged rich softies wasn't the whole story! It's interesting though that most of the current Aussie boxers are foreigners.
I read today the keys of Bray boxing club have been taken back by Wicklow county council and the club has been indefinetly closed, Pete Taylor still in hospital, talk about kicking a man whilst he is down,
That would likely be our police force exerting influence on the co. co. Due to the gym having an MTK "connection". (Ie the fact that Luke, turner and I think one other MTK boxer trains there). Classic knee jerk overreaction throwing the baby out with the bath water if true. Brilliant. Just brilliant. But doesn't Adam Nolan train there too? And isn't he a guard?
Thanks for the support and concern. Pete will be back in 4 weeks arm shattered so no pads for long time but have great coach Joe Clifford stepping in to help out in meantime and delighted to have pete determined to come back boxing is his life and he is not a man to hide away or give up. The club will re-open just query with council regards boxercise classes money making enterprise at gym but if these classes weren’t been run who pays the substantial bills to keep doors open as kids that do pay give little or nothing. He is providing great community service and be injustice if taken away. I’m sure things will blow over and be back to coaching soon.
