Agreed, although the sequence 10 seconds prior to the knockout...joe landed a pretty good right hand to the head. It definitely stunned Lee and set up the knockout Which makes my point...louis still had power in his right hand, he just was incapable of throwing it enough times due to his aging reflexes. He simply didn’t throw it anywhere near enough in his 50s fights
yes and it was a great left hook. in the film of the fight Louis uses his right. The right to the body was part of that sequence. It’s an example of using the right hand in contrast to these claims of Louis’ right being “gone”. Besides, Louis decked Agramante for a nine count with his right hand. It was almost a knockout.
Here’s a quote from Bivins post louis fight in 51 “Louis still hit very hard, he still had his punch, but his speed and reflexes weren’t there anymore.” Which backs up my point
The claims of the right hand being "gone" were made by Louis himself... In addition to those who had watched him his whole career. Just because he landed a one off shot does not mean it was not true.
Louis right was definitely nearly gone..which is why he only knocked out 3 of his last 10 opponents... Even the louis of 46-48 knocks out Brion, agramonte, and Bivins early
Agreed. It was most certainly gone. He only threw about 12 right hands total in Marciano and Charles fights combined
Louis stated his last great fight, where he felt like himself was against Mauriello inSept1946.He fought Marciano in Oct 1951 thats five years gap.
Joe Louis fought at an excellent pace against Cesar Brion in the rematch. The film is available on YouTube. But let’s forget Joe Louis’ right hand, it’s his legs now. What next his teeth?
Yeah he was a decent veteran but he was no longer world class in 1951. He was badly faded. Read his book sometime, his prime ended pretty quickly. He started showing signs of decline as early as 1945-1946.
Probably his teeth, too. You act surprised or as tho the target here is moving but all these things happen to ancient, beat-up fighters. It is a systemic deterioration of their skills and athletic ability. Is this new to you?
I love how the Marcianista will throw any other great under the bus in order to promote the ascendancy of the Marciano Supremacy... i.e. Louis was as good as prime or Louis was at his best at 213... Good stuff, guys.
